An eight-months-pregnant Sarah Jessica Parker didn't make the trip from Manhattan to L.A. for the Emmy Awards (see page 60), but that didn't stop her from staying close to her Sex and the City costars. In their limousine en route to the show, Kristin Davis, Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon phoned Parker at home to say they were thinking of her. Then during the ceremony, the actresses used a BlackBerry wireless device to e-mail messages to their East Coast-bound pal. "The first thing I BlackBerried her about was to ask how we looked on the red carpet," Davis told me afterward at the HBO party at Spago. "She said we looked fabulous. She was very pleased." A flurry of e-mails was also exchanged after executive producer Michael Patrick King won for best direction of a comedy series. Parker zapped the trio a note telling them she "jumped out of her chair" when King's name was called. "Technology!" said Davis with an ain't-it-great shrug.

Meanwhile, Talisa Soto, who's expecting her first child early next year with husband Benjamin Bratt, is having—count 'em—three separate baby showers. The first took place on Sept. 17 as 25 of her best L.A. friends held a dinner in her honor at Il Cielo restaurant in Beverly Hills. Lucy Liu, who costars with Soto in Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, was supposed to attend the three-hour fete but got caught working late on Charlie's Angels 2. Liu did manage to send over a gift of baby clothes. Showers are also in the forecast for New York City and San Francisco, where the couple maintain homes.

Chef Emeril Lagasse also has a bun in the oven. That is to say, his wife, Alden, is expecting their first child in March. Ironically, ever since she got pregnant, Alden has been unable to stomach any of her hubby's cooking. "She can't even look at food," says Emeril, who adds that she has given up such favorites as smothered pork chops. Emeril's other production, a weeklong Food Network special on America's regional cuisine, starts Sept. 29.

Kim Basinger looked decidedly unglamorous on Sept. 21 when she showed up for the black-tie Farm Sanctuary Gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel wearing denim overalls. Basinger had to forgo evening wear because she had surgery five weeks ago to treat a chronic back problem. As part of her post-op recovery, she has to wear a back brace—not the standard accessory for a form-fitting gown. Actually, given that she was at the banquet to accept an award for helping rescue farm animals from slaughter, her outfit wasn't all that inappropriate.
