On Sept. 27 in Manhattan, Yoko Ono, 69, reached a settlement with Frederick Seaman, 49, a former personal assistant to Ono and her late husband, John Lennon, over his use of 374 Lennon family photos. Ono sued Seaman in 1999, alleging that he had violated a confidentiality agreement by publishing articles about the Lennons and by stealing mementos from the ex-Beatle, which he sold to collectors. Seaman agreed to surrender all rights to the photos, return all stolen property and apologize to Ono. "I offer no excuses for my conduct," he said.
Grammy-winning soul singer Barry White, 58, announced on Sept. 27 that he needs a kidney transplant due to complications from years of chronic high blood pressure. He is currently undergoing dialysis to stabilize his condition.
Actor George Kennedy, 77, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 1967's Cool Hand Luke, was released from a Boise, Idaho, hospital on Sept. 30, three weeks after undergoing emergency triple-bypass surgery. Kennedy had originally entered the hospital for a hip replacement, but doctors found that sleep apnea had weakened Kennedy's heart and lungs.
Publishing magnate and philanthropist Walter Annenberg, 94, who created Seventeen magazine in 1944 and launched TV Guide nine years later, died of pneumonia at his home in Wynnewood, Pa., on Oct. 1. Annenberg, who was also the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Nixon, donated billions of dollars to charity and endowed two major journalism schools.
