Melanie Griffith Turns Her L.A. Home into a Candlelit Idyll as Celeb Pals Raise $1.4 Million for Calcutta's Girls
In some ways the Sabera Foundation benefit at the L.A. home of Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas on Oct. 10 was a typical celeb shindig: fabulous food (Indian specialties), tunes (Ricky Martin sang) and gowns (modeled by the likes of Cindy Crawford). But the over-the-top amounts guests bid for those gowns—Sylvester Stallone paid $30,000 for one—had little to do with Hollywood excess. Like the Voices of Hope CD (in stores Nov. 19), featuring Martin, Griffith and her cohost Penélope Cruz, the auction raised money to provide food, education and shelter for 140 of Calcutta's poorest girls—14 of whom came to L.A. for a week. "The night was all about the girls," says Cruz. "It was magical."
