On Trial: Jackson for the Defense
Another week, another bizarre Michael Jackson episode. On Dec. 3 the King of Pop returned to a Santa Maria, Calif., court to resume testimony in a $21 million lawsuit about canceled concerts in Sydney and Honolulu in 1999. The wackiness began once Jackson arrived at the courthouse wearing a flamboyant Edwardian outfit. He later sported crutches (he told onlookers a spider had bitten his left toe). During a brief break in testimony, he made faces at a photographer, sticking his thumbs in his ears and wiggling his hands. Earlier, he requested a bathroom break by telling the judge, "I have been holding it a long time. I really have to go."
The capper to the day came when the opposing lawyer asked Jackson, "Have you had any mental or memory problems?" Replied the singer: "I don't recall."
Sandler: Oy! to the world
"The Chanukah Song" is back. Adam Sandler, who first sang his tribute to the Jewish holidays on Saturday Night Live in the mid-'90s, introduces a new version in his animated film Adam Sandler's 8 Crazy Nights. As with the original, the song runs through a roster of Jewish stars (and some non), although many names have been updated. "There are so many famous Jews," says songwriter Lew Morton, who helped Sandler write the ditty, "that it's a shame to keep mentioning the same ones over and over again." So who's in and who's out this Chanukah?

He acts, he directs...he writes op-ed pieces? In a Dec. 2 opinion essay in the L.A. Times, Robert Redford took on President Bush and his energy policies. Redford, 66, criticized Bush for threatening war in the Middle East and said "drilling for more oil in the Arctic" was "costly, dangerous and self-defeating." By investing in energy efficient technology, he maintained, "American rooftops can be the Persian Gulf of solar energy." What does Bush think? He hasn't seen the article, but a White House spokesperson said "the President believes conservation and renewable energy development are very important."
Forest Gumption
Anyone who saw That Thing You Do! a 1996 film written and directed by Tom Hanks to celebrate the joys of the Merseybeat, probably wouldn't be surprised to learn that the actor attended the Nov. 29 memorial concert for ex-Beatle George Harrison at London's Royal Albert Hall. (Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty and Harrison's son Dhani, 24, were among those who performed Harrison's songs at the show.) But what exactly was Hanks doing onstage dressed as a Canadian Mountie, singing Monty Python's "The Lumberjack Song"?
Turns out Python members were already scheduled to perform their famous ditty about cross-dressing woodcutters at the tribute (Harrison was a big fan of the comedy troupe). The skit's director, David Leland, who worked with Hanks on last year's HBO series Band of Brothers, coproduced by Hanks, knew that the Oscar winner was a big Harrison fan. So Leland called Hanks the night before the scheduled performance. "I said that we needed an extra Mountie to sing 'The Lumberjack Song,' " recalls Leland, "and Tom said, 'I'm your man.' "
One More Ryder Revelation
Another twist in the Winona Ryder case: On Dec. 2 L.A. prosecutors recommended that the actress, who was convicted of felony vandalism and theft last month, be sentenced to three years' probation and 480 hours of community service. (Judges routinely accept these recommendations; sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 6.) Thus Ryder will avoid jail, as expected. What was not expected: Prosecutors disclosed that when she was arrested, Ryder, 31, was carrying in her purse the painkillers Demerol, Diazepam, Vicoprofen, Vicodin, Valium, morphine sulfate and Endocet. Ryder's lawyer has noted she was recovering from a broken arm and was prescribed the drugs.

I am always blown away by how many awful singers really believe they're the greatest.
Your cohost Brian Dunkleman quit. Any fear of flying solo next year?
I'm excited. I think it works very well having one person drive that show. I'm essentially a traffic cop.
You won't miss the witty banter?
I don't think there ever was any witty banter. I'm not funny. I can't tell jokes to save my life. And I don't think you need to be telling jokes to host a television show. I'm not going to stand up there and do a monologue.
Still in touch with Brian?
We haven't spoken in a long time. He's doing his thing; I'm doing mine. He wants to pursue stand-up comedy and acting.
So you'll primarily work the crowd and chat with the contestants?
I'm good when it comes to recognizing something I should jump on. Those spontaneous moments are some of the best stuff on the show.
Unlike Survivor or The Bachelor, the public picks the winners on your show, and you don't get advance notice. Frustrating?
I don't know how [other hosts] keep a secret. I would have three beers and think it would be cool to tell my friends.

Enrique Iglesias is young, rich and handsome and owns two luxurious homes on Miami Beach's Biscayne Bay. That's all about to change. Well, the last part anyway: The 27-year-old singer is selling his five-bedroom Mediterranean-style home on the Sunset Islands. Bought in 2000 for $3 million, the house underwent extensive renovations. It is currently listed for $9,7 million and boasts marble floors, a clay-tile roof, a pool and a guesthouse. Bonus points: Iglesias's "good friend," tennis star Anna Kournikova, lives nearby.
