Unlike his skirt-chasing, gizmo-wielding alter ego in Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan prefers life's subtler pleasures. "I love picking up my kids from school and having them run into my arms screaming, 'Daddy, Daddy,'" he says. "There's nothing like that."
Being Daddy-07 drew him to his latest movie, Evelyn, the true story of an Irishman's legal battle to gain full custody of his three kids after his wife leaves him. "The Bond films are great fun," says the actor, "but Evelyn really meant something to me." Brosnan, 50, who also produced the film, was raised by relatives after his parents split when he was a baby. As an adult he became a single dad to Charlotte, now 31, Christopher, 30, and Sean, 19, when his first wife, Cassandra Harris, died of cancer in '91. "I understood him," Brosnan says of his character. "It's not easy suddenly having this huge responsibility left just to you."
The movie was such a labor of love that when Brosnan wed journalist Keely Shaye Smith, 39 (the mom of their sons Dylan, 6, and Paris, 2), in 2001, the Irish-born actor took a dialect tape on their honeymoon to prepare for the part. "I had my wife and kids and the tape," confesses Brosnan. "They were very understanding because I listened to the tape a lot."
