The red ribbons celebs once wore to raise AIDS awareness may be out of fashion, but on Feb. 3 a galaxy of stars gathered for the American Foundation for AIDS Research's benefit in Manhattan to remind the world that the crisis isn't over. President Bush's recent call for an increase in anti-AIDS programs for Africa "galvanized us," said Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall. "Charities need us more than ever." Honoree Richard Gere was in a combative mood. At the podium, he said to Sen. Hillary Clinton, "Your husband did nothing" to fight the epidemic while in office. The next day the former President's spokesman argued, "He's wrong. President Clinton dramatically increased funding to combat AIDS." Still, the event was a success, raising more than $1 million. Just don't expect to see Gere and the Clintons dining together anytime soon.
