THE HOTTEST HOW-NOT-TO GUIDE TO DATING

They're not a couple, but they play one onscreen in the new hit How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Hudson, 23, is a journalist assigned to write a story about how to scare off a potential mate (Step 1: Ask him to fetch a soda during the final moments of a Knicks game); McConaughey, 33, is her unwitting subject. Offscreen McConaughey—a bachelor who has dated Sandra Bullock—says he'd never put up with such shenanigans. "Right there at the end of the Knicks game, when she asks for the drink," he says, "that would be our first sit-down."

"I would never in a million years do what [my character] does," says Hudson, who married ex-Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson in 2000. But she does admit to other aberrant dating behavior: "The one thing we didn't touch on in the movie is the 'drive-by,' [where you] drive by the guy's house to see if the car's there. I did that a few times." Just like a real-life couple, McConaughey and Hudson spent time getting to know each other. For him that meant hanging out with Hudson's clan (Mom is Goldie Hawn and "Pop" is Kurt Russell). "Three days with your family put at least six months on my life, just because of the laughter," he says. "The Osbournes got nothing on y'all." Hudson says she liked her costar instantly. "There's this thing in his eye that's slightly crazy," she says. "He's the naked guy with the bongos! You gotta love that guy."
