Diet guru Robert Atkins, 72, has been in a coma at a Manhattan hospital since April 8, when he slipped on an icy New York City sidewalk and hit his head. Atkins had surgery to remove a blood clot that formed on the surface of his brain after he fell. According to Atkins' rep, the doctor's "chances of a meaningful recovery are slim." Atkins is the author of the bestselling 1992 book Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, which emphasizes protein in place of carbohydrates.
The Wilhelmina Artist Management Agency filed a complaint against singer Beyoncé Knowles April 11 in Manhattan, alleging that the Destiny's Child star owes it more than $88,000 as a 10 percent commission from her April 2001 contract to be a spokeswoman for L'Oréal makeup. The agency says that it signed a contract with Knowles, 21, to be her exclusive agent for celebrity sponsorships. A rep for Knowles did not return calls.
Actors Arnold Schwarzenegger, 55, Bruce Willis, 48, and Denzel Washington, 48, sued Fry's Electronics on April 7 in L.A. for allegedly using their images in ads in the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers without their permission. According to the suit, the ads diminish their "hard-earned" reputations and risk "the potential for overexposure." Each actor is seeking $10 million. A rep for the San Jose, Calif.-based electronics chain could not be reached for comment.
Singer Eva Boyd, 59, better known as Little Eva, whose first recording as a teenager in 1962 became the number one hit "The Loco-Motion," died of cervical cancer April 9 in Kingston, N.C. Boyd was discovered while working as a babysitter for singer Carole King.
