The paper also agreed to pay "substantial sums" to children's charities. A lawyer for the paper said his client regrets "the embarrassment and distress which they have caused."
Nine-time Olympic gold-medal winner Carl Lewis, 41, was arrested in L.A. County on April 21 and charged with driving under the influence after he crashed his 2004 Maserati into a highway wall. The former track star, who was not injured, is due in court in July.
On April 17 a Santa Monica jury cleared rocker Tommy Lee, 40, of any responsibility for the 2001 drowning of a 4-year-old boy in a swimming pool at his Malibu estate during a children's birthday party (PEOPLE, April 28, 2003). The boy's parents, who had sued Lee for $10 million, were awarded no money. "There are no winners in this sad situation," said Lee in a statement.
Singer and pianist Nina Simone, 70, dubbed the High Priestess of Soul for her impassioned, masterful combinations of jazz, blues and pop, died April 21 after a long illness, at her home in Bouc-Bel-Air, France. After her first hit, 1959's "I Loves You, Porgy," the smoky-voiced chanteuse used her music to champion the civil rights movement with songs like 1969's "To Be Young, Gifted and Black."
...Actress Karen Morley, 93, the star of such 1930s movies as Scarface and Dinner at Eight, died March 8 of pneumonia in "Woodland Hills, Calif. Her career was cut short in 1947 when she refused to answer questions at a congressional hearing about her possible involvement with the Communist party.
