Daddy's Little Girls
As Father's Day Nears, Proud Celebrity Papas Reveal What They Treasure Most About Raising Their Daughters (Intimate Conversations, Sharing a First Dance)—as Well as What They Most Dread (Boys, Boys and Boys!)
Mayan Lopez never has to wonder if her father, George, will have time to watch her weekly baseball games: He helps coach the team. And the George Lopez Show star is hardly the only hands-on Hollywood dad reveling in bringing up daughters these days. David Hasselhoff takes his 10-year-old Hayley for clam chowder by the ocean every Sunday and shares "long talks" with his teenager Taylor-Ann. Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham lets toddler Leelee style his hair, and Andy Garcia taught each of his three girls to ride a bike. "Every day, I was like, 'I don't want to,'" says Dominik Garcia-Lorido, 19. "And he's wrapping a kitchen towel to hold me up while I learned." All these men hope to impart the lesson Meat Loaf has been teaching his daughters Pearl, 28, and Amanda, 22, "from the minute they could walk," he says: "Just because you're women, don't think there is a damn thing you can't do."
DAVID HASSELHOFF, HAYLEY AND TAYLOR-ANN
"My daughters are very different," says Hasselhoff, 50, of Hayley, 10, and Taylor-Ann, 13. "Hayley is like the Tasmanian devil. Taylor-Ann is quieter." But much to his dismay, the two girls have recently discovered a common interest: boys. While on a family vacation in Hawaii in March, "I was in the middle of a massage when all of a sudden Hayley tells me that Taylor-Ann is on the beach talking to boys," he says. "I didn't quite get my money's worth out of that massage."
LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM AND LEELEE
The Fleetwood Mac singer, 53, suffers no bad-hair days when he's around Leelee, 2. "They go to the mirror and do his hair together," says Buckingham's wife, Kristen, 33. Kids "make you strike a different balance in terms of your priorities," says Buckingham. "Things that used to drive me crazy now seem quite small."
MEAT LOAF AND AMANDA LEE ADAY
Onstage he's a tough rocker. But around his "little dumpling" Amanda, 22, an actress, Meat Loaf, 55, turns into a softie who answers to "Papa Bear," she says, and "burst into tears" when she called to tell him she had landed a new TV series, HBO's Carnivale. "I get much more emotional about her stuff than about mine," he says.
DONALD TRUMP AND IVANKA
Ivanka, 21, a junior at the University of Pennsylvania, calls Trump, 57, "every day," she says, "and he always picks up"—even if he's in a meeting. "I'll be on speaker phone, and he's just proud that I called, so he says, 'Say hi to everyone.'" But Trump isn't as welcoming when it comes to Ivanka's dates. "Nobody," he says, "is ever going to be good enough for my daughter."
GEORGE LOPEZ AND MAYAN
In February, George, 42, escorted Mayan, 7, to a school father-daughter dance. "It was the first corsage I ever bought," he says. "I even put on a suit with a pink shirt to match her pink dress." Mayan, however, was unimpressed. "Me and all the fathers were standing there, and the girls were all dancing with their friends!"
ANDY GARCIA AND DOMINIK, ALESSANDRA AND DANIELLA
"I'm basically at their beck and call," says Garcia, 47, of life with (from left) Dominik, 19, Alessandra, 12, and Daniella, 15. "'Papi, can you take me to...?'" But his chauffeuring skills haven't gone unappreciated. "I have some World's Greatest Dad trophies," he says. "One of them kind of looks like an Oscar."
