God works in mysterious ways. So you'd think he'd be expecting a surprise or two from Jim Carrey. But Morgan Freeman, who plays the Heavenly Father in Carrey's comedy Bruce Almighty, was caught off guard by a recent Carrey prank. When Freeman arrived in Vancouver to begin filming An Unfinished Life with Robert Redford and Jennifer Lopez, Carrey—a native Canadian—sent along a special north-of-the-border welcome. A fully outfitted Canadian Mountie rode up to Freeman on a horse on the Life set and recited the following message from Carrey: "I think you're neat, and according to the tracking, there are hundreds more that feel the same way. Now I have a hug for you, sir." After embracing the grinning Freeman, the Mountie added, "Welcome to Canada, the home of Jim Carrey."

Scott Foley and
Jennifer Garner aren't yet divorced, but they've already resolved one issue: They won't share custody of their two dogs—a Maltese, Charlie Rose, and a beagle mix, Maggie Mae. After living in Los Angeles for 12 years, Foley is taking the pooches and moving to New York City this summer. (Garner gets to keep Wesley, their cat.) The actor is set to star in the Broadway play The Violet Hour, which will open in the fall. "This is something that I've always wanted to do, and it comes at a perfect time in my life," says Foley, who admits he hasn't trod the boards since high school. "I'm only there temporarily, but if I like it, I may just stick around."

Lara Flynn Boyle has
just moved into a vintage Colonial Bel-Air that she's restoring to its original '20s splendor. The bad news: For the time being, she has no running water in the house. So before heading off to a recent soiree at the Hollywood home of CAA honcho Bryan Lourd to celebrate the release of the novel Maneater by Gigi Levangie Grazer, the actress washed her hair outside her house under a garden hose. Good thing Flynn Boyle isn't seeing anyone at the moment. She's holding out for Mr. Right, though, and says she hopes to find someone who is her intellectual equal.

"There are quite a few smart men out there," says Flynn Boyle. "I just don't see many smart men who want to be with a smart woman."

Avril Lavigne took a break from touring in Australia to spend the day at a beach in Noosa, Queensland. Looking glam (and far from skater girlie) in a black bikini, sunglasses and cowboy hat, Lavigne lounged around with bandmate Jesse Colburn, who her rep says is "just her guitarist and friend."
