Folk singer and neophyte novelist Judy Collins, 56, and the man she described as her life partner, industrial designer Louis Nelson, 59, wed April 16 at New York City's Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The couple have been together for 18 years. It is Collins's second marriage and Nelson's third.
On April 17 a Los Angeles jury recommended that Erik Menendez, 25, and Lyle Menendez, 28, spend their lives in prison without the possibility of parole for the 1989 shotgun slayings of their parents, entertainment executive Jose Menendez and his wife, Kitty. Defense motions for a new trial are scheduled to be heard July 2, at which time the judge will pronounce sentencing. In March, at the conclusion of their retrial for their parents' deaths, the brothers were found guilty of two counts each of first-degree murder. Their first trials ended in deadlocked juries in January 1994 after they claimed they shot their parents in self-defense after years of sexual abuse.
Buffalo resident Samuel S. Callea, 33, was arrested on April 16 in New York City after he allegedly ran toward Howard Stern, 42, making menacing gestures and shouting a death threat as the shock jock arrived at his midtown Manhattan radio studio. Stern escaped unharmed into the Madison Avenue building; his driver restrained Callea until police arrived. After finding a stolen shotgun in Callea's car, police charged him with possession of a weapon, possession of stolen property and criminal trespass. Callea was to be arraigned on April 17.
Former tennis ace Tracy Austin, 33, and her husband, mortgage broker Scott Holt, 35, had their first child, Dylan Matthew Holt (7 lbs.), on April 15 at Torrance Memorial Medical Center in Torrance, Calif. "It is unbelievable," says the new mom. "The love is so strong, it grows hourly. I can't believe that he's our little guy."
After a seven-month struggle with leukemia, Michelle Carew, 18, daughter of baseball Hall of Famer Rod Carew, died on April 17 at Children's Hospital of Orange County (Calif.). Carew gained national recognition when her father went public with his plea for bone-marrow donors to aid his daughter. Despite more than 70,000 responses, no match was found. "Hundreds of thousands of you have opened your hearts to Michelle and our family," said the Carews in a statement. "For that we are eternally grateful....
We can take solace in the fact that, because of [her], many lives have already been saved by the increase in marrow transplants performed in the weeks subsequent to our appeal."
