Actor Lorenzo Lamas, 38, took his fourth trip down the aisle on April 27 when he married model Shauna Sand, 24, at the Rockland County, N.Y., home of his mother, former film siren Arlene Dahl. Lamas, son of actor Fernando Lamas, met Sand last July when she was a bikini-clad extra in an episode of his syndicated TV series Renegade....
Actor-director Sean Penn, 35, and actress Robin Wright, 30, were married April 27 at the Santa Monica home of producer Art Linson (Fast Times at Ridgemont High). Guests at the outdoor ceremony included the couple's daughter Dylan Frances, 5, and son Hopper, 2, as well as Warren Beatty, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson and Dead Man Walking cohorts Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. It is Wright's first marriage, Penn's second. He and pop star Madonna divorced in 1989.
Microsoft's latest release is a girl. Computer software titan Bill Gates, 40, and his wife, Melinda French Gates, 31, welcomed their first child, Jennifer Katharine (8 lbs. 6 ozs.) on April 26 at Overlake hospital in Bellevue, Wash. The couple married on New Year's Day 1994....
Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, 48, and third wife, equestrian Madeleine Gurdon, 33, announced the debut of their daughter Isabella Aurora (7 lbs. 8 ozs.) at a London hospital on April 30. The couple have two sons, Alastair, 4, and Billy, 2. Lloyd Webber also has a son and a daughter from his first marriage.
On April 26, Tak Sun Tan, 19, Jason Chan, 18, and Indra Lim, 19, were charged by the L.A. district attorney's office with killing Dr. Haing S. Ngor, 55, winner of the 1984 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as photographer-translator Dith Pran in The Killing Fields. The three men, reportedly members of the Oriental Lazyboys gang, were each charged with murder and second-degree robbery. Ngor was shot to death on Feb. 25 in his carport.
Chicago police officials announced on April 26 that an "exhaustive investigation" had uncovered no evidence that WBC heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, 29, sexually assaulted beautician LaDonna August, 25, at a Chicago nightclub on April 7. The boxer spent three years in prison for a 1992 rape conviction and is serving four years probation....
A Detroit jury found Martell Welch Jr., 19, guilty of second-degree murder in the Aug. 19 death of 33-year-old Deletha Word. Word drowned in the Detroit River after she jumped from a bridge fleeing the former football player who had beaten her and smashed her car with a tire jack after her car struck his. Welch will be sentenced May 22....
A former associate of Van Cliburn's filed a breach of contract suit-against the 61-year-old pianist on April 29 in Fort Worth. Thomas E. Zaremba, 48, claims that Cliburn agreed to share his income in exchange for having Zaremba manage his business and personal affairs. Zaremba also said that Cliburn inflicted emotional distress by allegedly having "sexual encounters with partners he knew were HIV-positive" during their 17-year relationship. Cliburn's attorney says that the lawsuit is an attempt "to collect millions" and that his client "categorically denies the charges."
Actress Margot Kidder, 47, was transferred from Olive View-UCLA Medical Center to a private psychiatric facility on April 24. Kidder was admitted to Olive View after she was found on April 23 in the backyard of a home in a Los Angeles suburb, disheveled and claiming she was beaten and pursued.
Actor Hume Cronyn, 84, and family friend Susan Cooper, 60, are engaged to be married. (Cooper is the Newbery Medal-winning author of the children's series The Dark Is Rising.) The couple, who cowrote the 1980 play Foxfire, have not set a date. It will be Cooper's second marriage and Cronyn's third; he was wed for nearly 52 years to actress Jessica Tandy, who died in 1994....
It should be a rockin' wedding for songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, 52, and the chairman and co-CEO of Warner Bros, and Warner Music Group, Robert Daly, 59. Sager paid $453,500 for President Kennedy's oak rocking chair at the April auction of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's estate. She bought the chair as a wedding gift for her husband-to-be. The June 8 wedding will be Daly's second and Sager's third—her second husband was composer Burt Bacharach.
Suzie Wilson, 42, mother of 8-year-old actress Mara Wilson, star of the 1994 movie Miracle on 34th Street, lost her battle with breast cancer (PEOPLE, April 29) and died in Burbank, Calif., on April 26. Wilson, who was initially diagnosed in March 1995, had been undergoing chemotherapy since April of that year....
Screenwriter Stirling Silliphant, 78, died of prostate cancer on April 26 in Bangkok. He created the hit TV series Route 66 and won an Oscar for the 1967 movie In the Heat of the Night. After writing scores of television dramas and movies, Silliphant became disenchanted with Hollywood in the 1980s and moved to Thailand, where he embraced Buddhism.
