Anne Heche, 26, who stars in Walking and Talking, a comedy about the romantic travails of two women pals, began her acting career at 12. At 17, she was cast as twins Vicky and Marley on the NBC soap Another World, for which she nabbed a Daytime Emmy in 1991. "Acting is a free ride to explore what some people study years to do in real life," Heche says. "I have played a doctor, a seismologist, a dancer, a psychiatrist, a mother of three—things that I would never be able to do in one lifetime. It's playing, and I get paid to play. I can't see anything more appealing."
LOOK WHO'S STALKING
When the script for The Fan hit his desk, Wesley Snipes became obsessed with playing the criminally obsessed sports fan of the title. "I stalked [director] Tony [Scott] for three days," says Snipes, 34. "I drove by his house a couple of times and yelled out the car window, 'See, Tony? I can be a stalker!' " Although Robert De Niro won the role of the psychotic fan, Snipes got to play the baseball player De Niro stalks in the thriller, which opens this Friday (Aug. 16). A baseball jersey suited Snipes's sensibilities much better than the frilly frocks he wore as a cross-dresser in last year's comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. "I am not shaving my legs again," declares Snipes when asked if he would do the Wong thing again. "I burned every costume. The ones that didn't hit the fire, I donated to the Carnival Cruise Lines."
A BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO?
Surveying the crowd gathered on folding chairs in Edgartown Harbor on Martha's Vineyard, Mass., auctioneer Art Buchwald said, "If you have a daughter between the ages of 15 and 25, and if you don't buy this item, they will never talk to you again." The item—part of an Aug. 5 celebrity auction that raised $204,000 for a local human-services group—was an 8-mile bike ride with John Kennedy Jr., 35. Singer Carly Simon spurred the bidding when she wisecracked, "I don't know whether it's on the same bicycle or...if you're allowed to ride in back of him, which is what my choice would be, especially on the curves." Businessman John Connors, a Vineyard resident, won the prize for himself, wife Carolyn and daughter Kelley, 36, with a bid of $12,500. Connors was just warming up. For $13,000—the top price of the day—he and his two adults sons also claimed a sail with singer and local hero James Taylor.
In A Time to Kill, the hit movie drama based on John Grisham's novel, America's sweetheart Sandra Bullock plays a smart, sexy, ideologically passionate, tank-top-wearing law student. "Everyone wants me to get stuck in sweet parts," says Bullock, 32. "There is a whole other side of me that wants to get out." Still, there are limits to what she'll do for art. In the novel her character is kidnapped by the Ku Klux Klan, stripped, tied to a tree and whipped. In the film, Bullock's disrobing doesn't go quite that far. "The nudity seemed a little cheap," she says. "Anyway, I didn't want everyone inspecting my naked body and laughing."
