PAUL NEWMAN IN PANTY HOSE
Speed-crazy actor Paul Newman may be slowing down. "We won the [Rolex] 24 Hours of Day-tona last year," says Newman, 71, who drove 114 of the 682 laps to help his Roush racing teammates finish first in the GTS division of Daytona's sports-car endurance race. "But I'm getting a little long in the tooth. My wife [actress Joanne Woodward], being a very savvy lady, said the time to get out of the party is when it's cooking." Speaking of cooking, what gourmet treat can we next expect from Newman's Own, his successful line of specialty foods, the profits from which go to charity? "Ladies' lingerie," he. quips. "Maybe a signature series: Newman's Own Panty Hose. Lingerie that you use with salsa instead of chips. That's murky, but just leave it that way. And put in, 'He wasn't joking.' " Okay.

GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT
Teri Hatcher, who plays brainy Lois Lane in ABC's Lois & Clark, gets to show off her brawn in the new thriller 2 days in the Valley. The movie's plot, which links 10 disparate people in Los Angeles through a contract killing, includes a scene in which Hatcher and actress Charlize Theron pulverize each other in a knock-down-drag-out fight. "It was like one of Dynasty's Krystle-Alexis things," says Hatcher, 31. The battle was carefully choreographed, but Hatcher worried that she might perform too well: "I smash Charlize with a vase. It was so scary to me to take this object and I swing it into her. I said to I the stunt coordinator, I 'Couldn't she smash me with the vase? I would rather be the smashee than the smasher.' "

SPACE CASE
French Stewart wasn't surprised last year when he won the role of Harry, one of the endearingly goofy aliens on NBC's hit sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. He would have been surprised if he had been cast as one of the humans. "Let's face it: I'm weird," says Stewart, 32. "To tell you the truth, getting mug like mine onto network TV is no easy feat. It's something you can't put your finger on, but it's the same reason that I never get commercials. People don't want me selling their products. If I smile too hard, I just look mentally ill." Stewart attributes 3rd Rock's success partly to nation's obsession with inter-galactic life-forms. "All of the sudden, aliens are hot," he says. "It's just been in the news so much lately: The fossil from Mars, the pictures of the alien in Penthouse—which I was surprised to see in Penthouse because the breasts were a little small."

A REAL LOVING CUP
Brad Pitt isn't actually in Emma, but he might as well have been part of the cast. Scottish actor Alan Cumming, who plays Mr. Elton in the Jane Austen romance, says Pitt showed up "quite often'' to visit girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow, the star of the movie. The actress, he says, had her beau well in hand—even when he wasn't there. "I'd go into makeup in the morning, and she'd be drinking coffee out of a mug with a picture of Brad on it, one of those brooding, hunky ones," says Cumming, 31. "Very Freudian. I'd say, 'Stop that!' And she'd just laugh. If everyone went around drinking out of cups with pictures of their beloved on it, it would be a very strange world. You know, kind of getting oral gratification from something that reminds you of your boyfriend."
