Among the 1,300 guests at the biennial fund-raiser for the Children's Diabetes Foundation, held Oct. 25 at the swank Beverly Hilton, were enough A-list celebrities to stretch the local limo supply. "Everybody is here," marveled Geena Davis, mingling with Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, MC Jay Leno and such civilian notables as Marcia Clark and Christopher Darden. "It's the most fun night of all," said Goldie Hawn. "This is one of the only charity events where you really see a show."
Olympic softball hotshot Dot Richardson, in a slinky sequined number, cornered Kevin Costner and told him, "I adore you! I'm such a fan!" (Costner's comeback: "And I'm a fan of sparkly dresses.") Caroline in the City's Lea Thompson was thrilled to spot Rob Lowe ("I have a part in mind for him," she confided, before moving in to make her pitch), and Brooke Shields brought her Suddenly Susan costar Judd Nelson, since regular date Andre Agassi was off playing in a tennis match in Germany. Admitted Nelson: "I'm her stunt date."
An auction of 489 items, ranging from a German shepherd puppy to a visit to the X-Files set, helped raise $6 million to fight diabetes. "It is the event of the year," summed up attendee Jackie Collins. "If you are not invited to this ball, you leave town." Or get a new agent.
