"It's very provocative," says Laura Dern of see-through lace, the high-vamp fabric that has celebs including Madonna, Elizabeth Hurley and Toni Braxton suddenly playing peekaboo. A chic way to show one's undies—as well as nether regions of the skin—the look, explains Hollywood fashion stylist Kim Bowen, "is lasciviously appealing in a sophisticated way. The point is to make men's necks snap backwards." Adds Ellen's Joely Fisher, who revealed her bra in a black lace top at the Dante's Peak premiere in Los Angeles: "It's sexy. It feels like you're almost naked—but you can still leave a little bit to the imagination."
Going bare isn't for everyone. "It's for women who want to be a little naughty," says designer Richard Tyler, who helps Heather Locklear and Dern show off. But for those who opt for exposure, Bowen has some advice. "Don't hunch in your shoulders and look embarrassed," she says. "If you're going to show the world your underwear, do it with your head held high."
