Your tribute to Peter Jennings reminded me that he was the best Canadian import to America. His voice was not only one of reason but balance. His self-assured manner was a comfort to all of us, whether the news was good or bad. Peter, you will be sorely missed.

The certainty and passion with which Jennings delivered the news to us night after night was a source of hope for a better world. We owe him our thanks for the dedication and professionalism he brought to the news industry.

Perhaps Peter's greatest legacy will be the impact on today's smokers. I had a gentleman in my office note this morning that his motivation to quit smoking was Peter Jennings. Peter, you have touched so many people in more ways than you could have ever imagined.

Jennings's "valiant battle with lung cancer"? Give me a break. If he had never picked up a cigarette he'd still be alive today and People magazine would have featured the brave Dana Reeve on the cover instead. With all due respect to the grieving family of Jennings, my sympathies will go with the nonsmoker with lung cancer.

THE MURPHYS
I was truly moved by your story "The Gift of Family." The Murphys have shown that through love, patience and understanding, children with special needs can grow into adults who lead productive lives. Being the mother of a 7-year-old with Down syndrome, I can appreciate the joy John and Jeanette feel raising their children. The Murphys are an inspiration to us all.

BRANGELINA AND JEN
While Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's global interests are commendable, their example on the American home front is appalling. One of the largest plagues in this country is the destruction of the sanctity of marriage. Good luck, Jen.

SUFFOCATION GAME
Thanks for publishing" "Deadly Game." Not even an hour later, my son came into the living room and told us he and a friend just did the pass-out game. Needless to say, we sat the kids down and explained the dangers, and they read your article. They had no idea you could die from this sort of thing. You just may have saved these children's lives.

Editor's Note
On our Aug. 29 cover we should have credited Susana Monaco as the designer of the Gather halter dress worn by Britney Spears.
