• History buff: When in Rome, you do as the Romans did, which is why you'll see Purefoy in various stages of undress while playing Mark Antony. "The Romans had an unembarrassed attitude to their bodies and sex," says the Royal Shakespeare Company alum. "You have to show that."

• The bad old days: Before taking up acting at 18, Purefoy worked as a hospital orderly. "One time, I got asked to carry a big plastic bag," he recalls. "Through the plastic I left toes. It was an amputated leg."

• No yolk: He had roles in 2004's Vanity Fair and 2002's Resident Evil, but it was filming the 2001 epic A Knight's Tale that left the most scorching impression. Costumed in armor during a Prague summer, it got so hot "they dropped an egg on my backside and it fried," says Purefoy.

• Camera shy: Purefoy, who has an 8-year-old son, Joe, from a previous relationship, will only admit that he's currently not single. "The more you talk about it, the more the relationship becomes public property, and you can't complain about the paparazzi," says Purefoy, who's friendly with Jude Law. "Then it becomes, as we've seen recently, the worst nightmare."
