Actress Megan Mullally (Will & Grace), 46, strained a calf muscle Sept. 17 in L.A. while rehearsing an Emmy Awards number with Donald Trump and was taken to the ER. She'll wear a boot and use crutches for about three weeks. Mullally is in "good spirits" according to a rep.... Hip-hop artist Missy Elliott, 34, tore the Achilles tendon in her left foot Sept. 14 while practicing for her performance at TV Guide's Emmy after-party in L.A. She will undergo surgery this week. Elliott is on crutches and "in a lot of pain, [but] she's looking forward to recovering," says a rep.
Courtney Love was sentenced to six months in a lockdown rehab facility Sept. 16 in L.A. The troubled rocker, who violated her probation by taking drugs in July, dodged jail time due to a favorable report from a recent 28-day rehab stint. "I'm very pleased with your progress," said the judge.... John Rutter, 43, a photographer who Cameron Diaz alleges tried to blackmail her with topless photos he took of her, was sentenced on Sept. 15 in L.A. to nearly four years in jail for perjury and attempted grand theft. Rutter snapped the pictures of Diaz in 1992 and attempted to extort millions from her in 2003. A rep for Diaz would not comment.
On Sept. 14 in Santa Monica, David Hesterbey, a man who allegedly entered Jennifer Aniston's Malibu home in August, was ordered not to come within 100 yards of the actress for three years. Hesterbey was arrested after he allegedly broke into Aniston's house and told a staffer he was "looking for Jennifer." The actress was not home at the time. Hesterbey is being held on $70,000 bail and is due in court on Sept. 26. A rep for Aniston would not comment further.... On Sept. 19 in Madera County, Calif., a judge ruled that Anthony Flores, 29, is not legally required to make child support payments to Amber Frey, 30, the ex-girlfriend of convicted murderer Scott Peterson, because he is not the biological father of her older daughter, Ayianna, born in 2001. The judgment was based on a paternity test. "I can't believe Amber and her attorney would...not have the decency to apologize for what they've done," says Flores, who notes that he was paying $567 a month. "Amber in good faith always believed that Mr. Flores was her child's father," says her lawyer.
On Sept. 19 in Manhattan, actor Christian Slater, 36, struck a deal with prosecutors who charged that he had forcibly touched and sexually abused a woman on a New York City street in May (PEOPLE, June 15, 2005). All charges will be dropped as long as Slater stays out of trouble for the next six months. "I'm very happy," Slater says.
President George W. Bush's nephew John Ellis Bush Jr., 21, was arrested for public intoxication Sept. 16 in Austin, Texas. The youngest son of Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida, John was also charged with resisting arrest after he allegedly tried to avoid being handcuffed. He spent a few hours in jail and was released on $2,500 bail. John's older sister Noelle Bush, 28, has also had run-ins with the law: In 2002 she was arrested after she allegedly tried to fill a fake prescription for an antianxiety drug. During a rehab stint for the drug charge, Noelle was jailed twice when she was allegedly caught with drugs in the facility (she completed the rehab term in 2003). A spokeswoman for Governor Bush said, "This is a personal family matter, which they are dealing with privately."
Producer Sid Luft, 89, the third husband of actress Judy Garland—often credited with engineering her Hollywood comeback—died Sept. 15 in Santa Monica of natural causes. Luft produced her 1954 film A Star Is Born.... Producer and director Robert Wise, 91, a four-time Oscar winner best known for his beloved movie musicals West Side Story and The Sound of Music, died Sept. 14 in L.A. of heart failure. Wise received an Oscar nod for his work editing Citizen Kane. "His body of work set thresholds rarely achieved in the film industry," says Music star Julie Andrews.
