EXPECTING
Actress Brooke Shields, 40, and her husband, Chris Henchy, 41, a TV writer, are expecting their second child this spring. Earlier this year Shields wrote a book, Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression, about her struggles after the birth of her first child, daughter Rowan, 2.

ENGAGED
Home Improvement alum Zachery Bryan, 24, and his longtime girlfriend, Carly Matros, 23, are engaged. They plan to wed next summer.

SPLIT
Actress Gabrielle Union (Night Stalker), 33, and her husband, former NFL running back Chris Howard, 30, have separated after four years of marriage. The couple do not have any children.

RECOVERING
Arrested Development star Jason Bateman, 36, had outpatient throat surgery Nov. 1 to remove a benign polyp. "He is recovering nicely," Bateman's rep says.

UPDATE
On Oct. 25 model Kate Moss, 31, left the Arizona rehab clinic The Meadows, which she had entered for treatment after photos of her allegedly snorting cocaine were published by a British tabloid. The model was reunited with her daughter Lila, 3.

SENTENCED
On Nov. 1 in Van Nuys, Calif., David Hesterbey, 49, pleaded no contest to entering Jennifer Aniston's Malibu home in August as part of a deal that will send Hesterbey to jail for one year and requires him to stay at least 1,000 yards from Aniston and her home for 10 years. Prosecutors sought the toughest restraining order for Hesterbey following his arrest for breaking into Aniston's house (the actress wasn't home). "He was simply trying to visit Jennifer Aniston because he's an aspiring actor," his attorney told PEOPLE. Aniston's rep had no comment.

ANNOUNCED
On Oct. 31, four days after White House lawyer Harriet Miers, 60, withdrew her Supreme Court nomination amid widespread criticism, President Bush tapped Samuel Alito Jr., 55, to succeed Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Although Alito is a Yale grad with 15 years experience on the federal bench, the Senate confirmation hearings are likely to become a battle over his conservative record. Said Bush of his nominee: "He's scholarly, fair-minded and principled."

DEATHS
Elmer "Len" Dresslar Jr., 80, the voice behind the Jolly Green Giant who sang "Ho, Ho, Ho" in the popular TV commercials, died Oct. 16 of cancer in Palm Springs, Calif. Dresslar first recorded the jingle in 1959.
