SHERIFF'S BADGE
The honorary shield (estimated at $500-$700) he got during an '88 tour stop was one of hundreds in his collection.

SUIT
Country & Western tailor Manuel designed this three-piece embroidered gabardine outfit ($4,000-$6,000) for Cash (wearing it onstage with wife June in 1980). "You'll never see sequins or rhinestones with John," says Dunbar.

GUITAR
A gift from June, this vintage '30s "fiddle guitar" ($10,000-$20,000, with case) is one of the few instruments that Cash never played on tour. "It was purchased for its beauty," says Dunbar.

ALLIGATOR BOOTS
"He wasn't just the man in black; he was the man in boots," says Sotheby's collectibles head Leila Dunbar. These knee-high size 12's ($2,000-$3,000) were custom-made.

WALKING STICK
This owl and snake wooden cane ($500-$700) is one of seven sticks on auction that Cash "used to walk his property in Hendersonville Tenn.," says Dunbar.
