Onstage, making her first high-profile appearance since her July 24 release from a treatment facility, Mary-Kate Olsen (left, with sister Ashley) thanked fans for their support. Before the show, the pair made the rounds in Miami, dropping in at Nobu for Blender's party and visiting the hotspot Mansion, where Paris Hilton hosted a bash of her own.

"The night couldn't get any better," said Usher, who won two awards.

While daughter Apple waited for Mommy back at the Delano Hotel, Gwyneth Paltrow said "Hey Ya!" to Outkast's Andre 3000.

Outside the American Airlines Arena, Jennifer Lopez greeted the crowd after arriving with husband Marc Anthony. The diva donned a Stella McCartney dress; shade was provided by her Tracey Watts hat. She kicked off the show by welcoming MTV to Miami, calling it "the steamiest and sexiest town on the planet."

SISTERLY LOVE

Sen. John Kerry's I daughters Alexandra (left) and Vanessa were cheered—and jeered—when they told the crowd get out and vote.

"We've had so much fun on the road "said Hilary Duff (left) of touring with Haytte. Her love life? "My car is my boyfriend."

Ashlee Simpson (left) vamped with Jessica at the Trim Spa party at Prive—and held hands with ex Ryan Cabrera. (Ashlee's rep says they're friends.)

Does Beyoncé's do mean big hair is back in style? "Yes," she said emphatically. Though her mom, Tina, who designed her get-up, said it "never went out of style."

Alicia Keys (in Roberto Cavalli) won for Best R & B video, but said performing onstage with Stevie Wonder (left) and Lenny Kravitz was "a dream come true"

Flying in from London, where she is finishing up her solo album, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani wore Louis Vuitton. Hairstylist Danilo—"he always hooks me up"—created her follicle flowers.

Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony stayed far apart on the red carpet, but sat together during the show. They also held hands in the green room and her dressing room.

Christina Aguilera put on an Arlequin dress—and gathered an eight-person entourage—for Usher's Motorola posty at the Shore Club.

PARIS MATCH?
From the Olsens to Christin Aguilera, everybody showed up for Paris Hilton's Virgin Cola pre-party at the Mansion, but it seems Paris was burning for actor Simon Rex. The pair—who were spotted holding hands and kissing in Miami—both star in the upcoming comedy National Lampoon's Pledge This! And both have appeared in explicit sex tapes. He says he's "not dating anyone"—but they seem to have plenty in common.

TOP HATS
Was it the heat, or just a bad hair day? These stylish male VMA attendees brimmed with confidence.

With posse members Naomi Campbell and Bruce Willis, P. Diddy encouraged the MTV audience to vote with his "Vote or Die" campaign. "We're giving the election process a makeover," he said, "bringing youth around."
