Gwyneth Paltrow recently bought a condominium at the swank Esperanza Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It's the same spot where she honeymooned with husband Chris Martin in December 2003. A source at the resort says the couple also returned for a brief stay—paid for with a gift certificate the actress received in an Oscar goody bag—in early August, just before Paltrow headed out to promote her new sci-fi movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. According to a local real estate broker, two-bedroom units at the resort are usually sold as time-shares and cost $315,000 for six weeks of annual usage.
BACK TO SCHOOL
Former Apprentice contestant Troy McClain, 33, who frequently talked about his lack of a college education on the reality series last year, is going back to school. Next spring McClain will start classes at Boise State University, and the $3,520 annual tuition will be paid for by none other than Donald Trump. "Troy is a very smart guy who has done very well but doesn't have a big education," says the real estate tycoon.
Adam Sandler celebrated his 38th birthday Sept. 9 at the Terrace restaurant in L.A.'s Hotel Bel-Air with just his wife, Jackie, and half a dozen of their closest friends and family. No toasts, no cake, no presents.... Madonna and Guy Ritchie also kept the director's 36th birthday low-key. The couple celebrated by gathering their family and friends for an Irish-themed party at the Punch Bowl, their favorite local pub in London.... I hear that Girls Gone Wild creator Joe Francis just sold his L.A. estate to the Lakers new head coach Rudy Tomjanovich for $4.3 million.
BACK IN BUSINESS
Heidi Fleiss is back to her old tricks...so to speak. The former Hollywood Madam, who did 21 months in federal prison for charges relating to her call-girl ring, tells us she is planning to open a 136-room brothel about 90 miles from the Las Vegas Strip. "It's going to be called Heidi Fleiss's Paradise," she says, adding that the building will be designed as a replica of the White House. "I know this business better than anyone. I know what people want. It's my one area of expertise." Fleiss, 38, hopes to be up and running by 2006.
IS SHE OR ISN'T SHE?
Avril Lavigne has a new band...on her hand. Last week the 20-year-old pop star showed off a large ring to a friend in Bel Air (far left) and to partygoers at the Spider Club (center), leading to speculation that she is engaged to Sum 41's Deryck Whibley. The couple started dating this summer, but reps aren't talking. A friend of the pair laughs and says, "They're probably just messing around."
