MANDY MOORE in Oscar de la Renta raved that she wanted "just about everything" in the designer collection. But if she had $10,000 to spend on anything, "it would be shoes," said the singer and actress, who attended six shows. "I'm a total shoe girl!"

The hottest items at N.Y.C.'s 2005 Spring/Summer Olympus Fashion Week didn't come down the runway—they sat in the front row. We're talking about the parade of A-listers, including J.Lo, Jennifer Connelly, Mischa Barton, Jessica Simpson and Janet Jackson, who turned the shows into red-carpet events akin to premieres. When the lights dimmed, though, everyone was a spectator. Perhaps it was up-and-coming fashionista Anne Hathaway who best summed up the week: "If s just a good time and a sneak-peek at the clothes—and the hope that somebody is going to give you something for free!"

Where worlds collide—film producers, stars, other designers. The It girls regularly turn out for Jacobs's show, which always has a cool, edgy, insider feel. This season's event was the front row front-runner of the week, packed with celebs like Natalie Portman, Kate Hudson, Josh Hartnett, Liv Tyler and her dad, Steven Tyler.

Where the simply chic go to find simple, chic clothes. And more than a few were curious to check out new designer Francisco Costa and his fave fans Hilary Swank and Mandy Moore.

H HILFIGER
The show for Tommy Hilfiger's newer high-end line is where the hip-hop crowd meets the prep squad. P. Diddy, Janet Jackson, Mischa Barton, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, Nick Lachey and Thalia all showed up to give Hilfiger his props.

DECENT PROPOSAL: When Nicole Richie opened a ring box at the Vera Wang show while sitting next to her boyfriend, DJ A.M., engagement rumors swirled. But the $3,750 bauble was a gift from jewelry designer Judith Ripka....

BAGGAGE CLAIM: It pays not to be whisked past the freebie booth by burly bodyguards, as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and J.Lo were—they missed out on $4,500 in loot from Cotton Incorporated. Claire Danes stopped long enough to snag one of only 12 travel bags by Miriam Maltagliati reserved for A-listers. It was stuffed with an Olympus Stylus digital camera, a miniprinter, a satellite radio, and more....

"SCOPE"-ING THE CROWD: Katie Couric, Nia Vardalos, Iman and designer Carmen Marc Valvo opened the week by launching the "Be Seen, Be Screened" campaign sponsored by the Entertainment Industry Foundation's National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance, which alerts women to colon-cancer risks. Couric, a long-time supporter of colon-cancer research, is more of a novice when it comes to the catwalk. "I don't go to many shows," she says. "Everybody looks so chic, and I always feel like a nerd."...

ICE CAPADES: Naomi Campbell sported a $10 million diamond halter top during the finale designer Chris Aire's first runway gig. The 242.98-carat creation even topped the $500,000 diamond-crusted guitar Aire gifted to Wyclef Jean, who performed at his show....

OVERHEARD AT FASHION WEEK: Ivanka Trump at the Behnaz Sarafpour show: "If I heard two years ago that my dad would be nominated for multiple Emmys, I would have laughed." Nick Lachey at H Hilfiger: "I'm here to pick up a little fashion sense. I usually just let Jessica pick out an outfit and throw it on." Venus Williams, a fashion student at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, at the Luca Luca show: "Some people are just looking at the pretty clothes, but I'm looking at the cut and the drape." Steven Tyler at the Anna Sui show: Was he looking at clothes? "Not necessarily." Models? "Exactly." Mary-Louise Parker at the Luca Luca show: "I like to see the girls walk by because they are so pretty. They're little freaks of nature."

Jennifer Lopez dishes with PEOPLE about makeup, fashion and achieving the J.Lo glow

What are some of your favorite makeup tips?
"Lots of moisturizer! I wear sunscreen every day. I tan sometimes, because I love the sun and I love the heat, but I do wear sunscreen. And sleep! I think that's the most important thing. I don't think people realize how important sleep is for your skin, your face, your well-being or your head! I think the world is walking around sleep-deprived. That's the problem in the world."

What is your advice to those who might 'over-glow'?
"Oh my God! There is definitely an epidemic of over-glow! No Vaseline, no baby oil. Not on the face. This is why you want to get my kits, because they can give you that light shimmer without making you look oily or greasy. If your skin is oily you must blot. You don't want over-glow because that never looks good. A little shine, a healthy glow looks nice. There was an old-school thinking about makeup where everything was matte and set and perfect. But now, what's beautiful about modern day makeup is that a little bit of the skin comes through and a little bit of the natural shine. That's what the whole concept of my Glow kit is: letting that whole natural shine come through."

What do you do when you're having a bad hair day?
"Grab a hat! I love hats, so on a bad hair day I put it up in a hat or in a ponytail and put a hat on top of that too."

Fill in the blank: I wish ______ were still in style.
"I wish gauchos were still in style. I love them. They were like short pants that were loose to the knees. They had a cool look to them. I wore a gaucho tight pant to the American Music Awards a few years ago. That was the closest I came to bringing back gauchos, but it didn't really catch on."

Round-toe or pointy-toe shoes?
"Both. "Why limit yourself?"

Who do you consider to be the best-dressed celeb?
"For me, the style icons would be Marilyn Monroe for the glamor factor and Jacqueline Onassis for the ladylike factor. It sounds stereotypical, but to me, if you mix their styles together you get something really special, and I think that's what I try to do. I try to mix the ladylike sweetness with the really sexy vampiness and glamor and come out with my own thing. So I would have to say the two of them."
