KATIE AND TOM CALL IT QUITS: After four years together, Today show cohost Katie Couric and L.A.-based TV producer Tom Werner have grounded their long-distance romance. A source confirms that their separate lives on opposite coasts caused the split. "The distance was really taxing," says the insider. "The relationship ran its course." Couric and Werner, who met on a blind date through mutual friends in 2000 and who previously took a two-month break back in 2002, usually saw each other twice a month, with Werner often dropping in on New York City during his trips to Boston (he is a co-owner of the Red Sox). "They traveled together, went everywhere," says the source, "but the distance had become untenable." Reps for the couple had no comment.

PENNY'S BIG NIGHT: There was no shortage of celebs who turned out to toast Penny Marshall on her 61st birthday: Eddie Murphy, Justin Timberlake, Winona Ryder, Farrah Fawcett and Robert Downey Jr. were just a few of the stars who attended a private fete for Marshall at the Esquire House in Beverly Hills Oct. 9. As partygoers noshed on fried chicken by the infinity pool, Timberlake chatted with Backstreet Boy Kevin Richardson while lovebirds Mischa Barton and Brandon Davis cooed and kissed. Around 11 p.m., 10 birthday cakes appeared to feed the crowd of 200, who joined to sing, "Happy Birthday."

THE MARRYING MAN: The single life isn't wearing well on bachelor John Stamos. "I hate it," says Stamos, 41, who recently split with actress Rebecca Romijn after a 5½-year marriage. "It's only been six months, and I can't wait to fall in love again." On Stamos's wish list: a woman who is ready to have kids. "My time with Rebecca was so exciting and fun. We really enjoyed life, but now I'm ready to have a family and want somebody who wants that too," says the actor, whose as-yet-untitled sitcom premieres early next year. "I'm making a prediction," says Stamos. "I will be married within the next year and a half to two years. I'm going to the next part of my life."

TWO IF BY SEA: On Oct. 9 Tiger Woods and his bride, Elin Nordegren, whiled away a day on a Barbados beach before taking a skiff back to their honeymoon yacht Privacy (right). The couple, who wed at the island's secluded Sandy Lane resort Oct. 5, are in no rush to leave. "We're having so much fun," Woods told reporters by phone, "I don't know if I'll be back or not."
