"She is looking wonderful recently—a great figure, don't you agree?" says Oscar de la Renta, who designed the embroidered-silk-and-satin ensemble (right) that Laura Bush will wear the night of her husband's Jan. 20 inauguration. Inspired by the color of her eyes ("like sapphires," he says), de la Renta created a gown that will get her through 10 balls. "When she dances, she can kick her legs out," he says. "Movement is important!"

"Dressing the First Lady is an honor," says Jennings of Mrs. Bush, whom she will dress for two events. "She's very beautiful and gracious. How could you have a better subject?" Herrera has the honors for the Texas State Society's Black Tie & Boots gala.
