Shortly after Queen Elizabeth said she would not attend his April 8 wedding, Prince Charles experienced another royal headache: Word leaked that he thinks his future subjects have "tortured" him over his relationship with fiancee Camilla Parker Bowles. "I thought the British people were supposed to be compassionate. I don't see much of it," Charles says in the upcoming book A Soul on Ice: A Life in News, by BBC journalist Gavin Hewitt. The interview, conducted in 1998, also quotes the prince as saying, "I don't see any reason why I should define my private life. All my life people have been telling me what to do. I'm tired of it. My private life has become an industry." A spokes-woman for the royal family would only say, "We never comment on private conversations the Prince of Wales may or may not have had." More bad news: Charles's father, Prince Philip—and possibly other senior royals—won't attend the civil ceremony, though they are expected to join the Queen at a service of dedication for the couple at Windsor Castle after the wedding.
