Joan Lunden knows exactly what you're thinking. "It's an obvious question," she says. "'What, are you crazy? Two sets of twins?'" In fact the former
Good Morning America host, already a mother of five, was planning for just one more child. But when surrogate mother Deborah Bolig, 44, was implanted with three embryos that Lunden, 54, and her husband, Jeff Konigsberg, 44, had created from donated eggs and his sperm, two of them ended up taking. "I was just glad we didn't get triplets!" says Lunden, whose first set of twins, Max and Kate, were delivered by Bolig just 21 months ago. "I wasn't planning for four babies under 2, but when you do surrogacy, you have that great possibility."
Born on March 1, Jack Andrew and Kimberly Elise are already showing distinct personalities. "It seems like she's the one who's more demanding," says Lunden, who also has three daughters (17, 22 and 24) from her first marriage. Though they have a nanny to help with Max and Kate and a baby nurse for Jack and Kim, Lunden, who just finished a gig hosting CBS's
Wickedly Perfect, and Konigsberg, a summer-camp owner, know they've got a wild ride ahead. Still, says Lunden, "it's more fun in the house with more kids."
But don't get any ideas. "Deborah told Jeff, If you want to do this again, you've got to find another surrogate,'" says Lunden. "I said, 'Deborah, if he wants to do this again, he needs to find another wife.'"
