Devotees of Kabbalah, a mystical Jewish doctrine, Madonna (who was raised Catholic) and Ritchie attended a March 24 party at London's Kabbalah Centre to celebrate the festive Jewish holiday of Purim. Kabbalists wear costumes on Purim to "give a lighthearted view of their old self," says a spokeswoman. "It's all done with a sense of humor."
Still, Ritchie's pontiff motif raised eyebrows. With the Pope ailing, "this has crossed the line from bad taste to obscenity," says Bill Donohue, president of the U.S.-based Catholic League. Counters Madonna's spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg: "They meant no disrespect at all. Madonna said jokingly, I was hoping the paparazzi would take some pictures of us. I know if my father sees the picture, he could finally be proud of me.' "
