These Stars Come Clean About Their Beauty Evolutions
She started exercising and eating better
"It wasn't about my figure. I felt heavy and lethargic, so I started exercising to feel more fit and have more energy. Then it snowballed into, 'Oh, I feel good, and I want to keep it going.' "
How much did you lose? "20 lbs." And now?
"I eat anything I want. Sometimes my portions are smaller. Or I eat more protein than carbs. But here's a radical statement: I refuse to give up the foods I love—macaroni and cheese, anything fried, potatoes any style, iceberg lettuce and avocados."
Were you really called Fatso as a kid? What would you say to that person now?
" 'Thank you for being so mean to me. You only made me stronger.' "
Then & Now
NICE HAIRCUT, DREW!
"Thank you. I think I did that in my bathroom."
"The daisies in my hair... I was just being myself.... I love being playful."
"I look the oldest I've ever looked, and I like that. I want to get older. I like wrinkles and wisdom and aging."
She has a new body and a new attitude
How has your recent weight loss affected you?
"Basically getting into the gym and eating healthy has helped everything from confidence to the way I carry myself. I feel more comfortable with who I am."
How are you dressing now?
"I've become a little bit of a snob and started buying designer. Now that I've been wearing all the cute designer clothes, I haven't been a fashion 'don't' very often."
How else has your self-image changed?
"I used to hate the bump in my nose, but now I think it has a lot of character. Now one of my favorite things about my look is my profile."
SASSY TO SLEEK
What was she going for? Her longtime stylist Rachel Zoe Rosenzweig tells us
Jan. 14, 2000
"This was a sweet, innocent look. Minimal jewelry and makeup. Very fresh-faced."
Jan. 8, 2001
"She was playing with an edgier, rock and roll look here. That is not so Jessica now."
She gives her famous braids a rest
"I definitely love my braids—they make me feel regal and individualistic. But I'm a person who doesn't like to be stuck in one style. So when I started feeling like I was getting stuck by constantly wearing them, I did want to change it up a little. That's when I started turning into a butterfly and making changes. Mystery—this is the theme. Mysterious."
"It's really fun to transform yourself"
Dec. 12, 2001
"I wore braids for a long time because it is a convenient hairstyle."
Feb. 27, 2002
"I covered my eyelids in the heaviest stones ever, which is why my eyes are almost closed."
Sept. 15, 2004
"I had this tan, and I really wanted to do this crazy '80s-looking hairstyle swept to the side."
Feb. 13, 2005
This natural look "takes an hour and a half."
She's busy experimenting
How has your look changed since your TV show Lizzie McGuire?
"I feel really lucky because I'm constantly doing photo shoots and learning about new styles. I don't even know if I have my own style because I'm so spazmastic."
Growing up, who was your beauty role model?
"First it was my sister, but then later I loved Alicia Silverstone because she was in Clueless, and for my era that was around the time girls were starting to wear makeup and dress cool. Now I like Diane Lane a lot. I think she's great."
Do you ever feel insecure?
"I'm just a normal girl. Some days I think I'm beautiful, and other days I think there is nothing that can help me."
GIRL TO WOMAN
Aug. 8, 2002
"I just have braids, which I did then and still do because it's not a hassle."
Aug. 2, 2003
"Some days I wear a lot of makeup. That day I went very natural."
July 14, 2004
"I have extensions in. I like them because they're fun. I can do more with it."
Feb. 9, 2005
"The lips? Lancôme Candy Apple stain. Put gloss on and it never wears off."
Retro or modern, any look goes as long as it's creative
Can you do your own hair and makeup?
"I'm a ponytail kind of girl because that's all I know how to do! I can do makeup fairly well—so don't expect any horrible yellow eye shadow—but for events, it's better to be safe than sorry. I have pretty good boys to fix me up."
How do you decide on a red carpet look?
"At the last few events, I've had a person in mind and we sort of re-create an image. For the Oscars it was a modern version of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. For the Globes I was looking at old photos of Lauren Bacall."
Does being from New York City affect your day-to-day style?
"It inspires me to be different and creative. In L.A., everybody ogles each other. In New York, everybody does their own thing."
