LINDSAY LOHAN ADMITS TO FEELING THE PRESSURE TO BE THIN AS SHE CONTINUES TO SHRINK AT A RAPID RATE
When Lindsay Lohan was handed a pair of jeans with a 24-inch waist—the smallest size in stock—at a May 16 promotional giveaway at New York's Ritz-Carlton hotel, the 18-year-old actress exclaimed, "These look so tiny!" Convincing Lohan the pants would indeed fit, two friends accompanying her responded: "Lindsay, you are tiny!"
That same thought has crossed many minds as Lohan has appeared startlingly thinner of late. She attributes her slimmer figure to a new exercise regimen "I'm working out. I just got a trainer," she told PEOPLE. Pilates? Yoga? "No, none of that stuff, though I'd like to try it sometime. Just old-school working out." She does admit to falling prey to Hollywood expectations. "There's a lot of pressure [to be thin]," she told an Access Hollywood crew at the same event. "Especially when you lose a lot of weight and people are telling you, 'You look great!' You are like, 'So, did I look fat before?'"
Despite the scrutiny over her shrinking waistline, Lohan hasn't kept a low profile. She partied with Jon Bon Jovi May 16 at the New York City hotspot Butter. And on May 10, 11 and 14, she hit the L.A. scene with Jake Gyllenhaal, though a source says, "They're not really a couple couple yet." And a bulkier Lohan may be on the horizon. She recently met with Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams to discuss a role in the action film.
For now, though, she says that she's just an average girl. Checking out a small pair of sweats at the giveaway, sponsored by Lucky and Cargo magazines, Lohan asked, "Do these come in bigger sizes? I'm really not that tiny."
Brangelina: African Days
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been spending quality time in Africa, though many miles apart. Jolie participated in a humanitarian mission in Sierra Leone, meeting with President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and talking privately with victims of the violent civil war that ended in 2002. "I'm not here as a politician," said Jolie. "I'm here as a woman. As a mom." Back at her hotel, Jolie asked about workers' salaries. Upon learning that they made the equivalent of $27 a month, she cried, "What a mess," a hotel employee said, and gave them $20. Meanwhile, Pitt continued filming Babel with Cate Blanchett in the Sahara. Offscreen, Blanchett's son Roman, 1, was scalded by hot water. Mom and son flew to England for treatment.
For Dad, with Love
GWYNETH PALTROW TELLS A LONDON PAPER OF HER BOUT WITH DEPRESSION AFTER HER FATHER'S DEATH—AND THE JOYS OF BABY APPLE
After Gwyneth Paltrow's father, Bruce, died in October 2002 following a recurrence of throat cancer, the actress battled clinical depression and fought through feelings of guilt at not having done enough for him during his illness, according to a revealing interview published in the May 17 edition of London's Evening Standard. Speaking openly about her dad's death, Paltrow, 32, told the newspaper that "I was in so much denial for so much of his illness. The thought of life without my father was totally unfathomable to me." What eventually got her through the grief was the birth of her daughter Apple. "She's been very healing for us—for myself, my brother, my mother," said Paltrow. "For me, the greatest joy before I gave birth to her was the idea that she would be one-quarter my father."
The actress—who spoke to the paper in support of Maggie's Centres, a U.K. cancer charity endorsed by a friend of Paltrow's, artist Sam Taylor-Wood—now has a new outlook on life. "I'm not as stringent as I was in the past," said Paltrow, who used to adhere to a strict macrobiotic diet. "Now I'll have cheese once in a while or white flour, but I still believe in whole grains and no sugar." That openness extends beyond just eating. "I am much better at living in the moment," she told the Evening Standard. "I found myself worrying so much less about what I haven't done. Life is here, in this moment, now."
A FATHER AND DAUGHTER BOND
On the first birthday of baby Apple, Paltrow's daughter with Coldplay's Chris Martin, the rocker disclosed that he tends to keep his daughter close at hand—literally. "There's normally an 'A' there," he said during a visit to XM Satellite Radio's Washington, D.C., studio May 14, pointing to his palm and indicating that he draws the letter on the inside of his hand. Also on the family front: He said that Paltrow plays a part in his song writing process, explaining, "I must involve Gwyneth, my wife." Involved she is: On May 17 Paltrow cheered enthusiastically from the audience as Coldplay performed a show for the AOL Music LIVE! series at New York City's Beacon Theater.
Kenny's Former Fiancée
Kenny Chesney's former fiancée Manday Weals Conner has much in common with his new bride, Renée Zellweger. Not only were they born on the same day (April 25, 1969), but Mandy had her own barefoot wedding this past March, when she married commercial business developer Jim Conner on a Key West, Fla., beach. Mandy, a health-care manager, and Chesney, 37, split in 2000 after 2½ years together. (Chesney wrote "I Can't Go There" about the breakup.) There were no hard feelings, she says, adding that they fell apart due to career and time conflicts. They still keep in touch. "Kenny is an exceptional guy," she says. "I was proud of him. Had he married some bimbo who just looked good, it would have been insulting to me."
THE BACHELOR WINNER
And after the final rose? "We rode in a car together alone—it was so weird!" says Sarah Brice, Charlie O'Connell's pick on the May 16 finale of The Bachelor. The two are planning a vacation in Aruba. For now, "we're going to go get coffee," says O'Connell.
Destiny's Child's Bar Mitzvah
How much for a personal serenade from Destiny's Child? British retail billionaire Philip Green paid a reported $2.2 million to have the pop trio sing an hour-long set at his son Brandon's May 14 bar mitzvah in the South of France. (One booker estimates Beyoncé alone might go for $750,000 at a private function.) Opera star Andrea Bocelli also played at the weekend-long party, estimated to cost a total of $7.4 million.
It's a classic tale: Christina Applegate, 33, opened Sweet Charity to mixed reviews out of town, then broke her foot. The show closed. But wait! Applegate rallied to reopen it on Broadway—and on May 10 received a Tony nomination for best actress in a musical.
Given all the drama, do you fee vindicated?
Absolutely. It's a glorious victory for all of us.
Anyone you'd like to say "I told you so" to?
Yeah. Actually, there's a couple of people.
How did you celebrate?
I went out to this restaurant I go to a lot and ran into Hank Azaria. So Hank [a Tony nominee for Spamalot] and I sat and had a glass of champagne.
So how's the foot?
It's getting better. It's broken but not as broken. I wear a brace in my shoe, plus I tape it, and I'm very careful. Unfortunately, the only shoes I can wear outside of the theater are my sneakers.
Your next goal?
I'm on a mission to wear high heels by June 5 [the Tony Awards show].
Do you have a perfect set of heels in mind?
I don't know what I'm wearing yet, but I'm sure they'll be fantastic. I'm going to have to go through physical therapy training to walk in heels.
How painful is your foot while performing?
It goes in degrees. The second show of the day or the last show of the week, it doesn't feel very good.
Does your husband [Johnathon Schaech] help with the physical therapy?
He's been amazing. I come home, he gets the ice. We do our ritual every day.
Are you bonding with your fellow cast members?
The reason that I fought so hard [to revive the show] is because of them. They are the best people I've ever known. We go for a couple of glasses of wine, we hang out, we get stupid! They're awesome.
