Actor Sean Patrick Thomas (Barbershop 2), 34, and his girlfriend, actress Aonika Laurent, 34, announced that they are engaged and that they will wed in the fall. It will be the first marriage for both.
SETTLED
On June 15 in Hernando, Miss., a judge finalized a confidential divorce settlement between singer Jerry Lee Lewis, 69, and his sixth wife, Kerrie McCarver Lewis, 42. They were married for 21 years and have a son, Jerry Lee Lewis III, 18.
IN TREATMENT
Eleanor Mondale, 45, the daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale, was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. She is undergoing radiation and chemotherapy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for two tumors in her frontal lobe.... Actor Roy Scheider, 72, underwent a bone marrow transplant as part of his treatment for multiple myeloma. A rep could not be reached for comment.
UPDATE
On June 15 in Waco, Texas, former Baylor University basketball player Carlton Dotson, 23, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the 2003 shooting death of his 21-year-old teammate Patrick Dennehy (PEOPLE, July 14, 2003). Dotson's lawyer says, "I think [the judge] was extremely fair."
CONVICTED
On June 21 in Philadelphia, Miss., former Ku Klux Klansman Edgar Ray Killen, 80, was convicted of manslaughter in the deaths of three civil rights workers 41 years ago. In 1964 James Chaney, 21, Michael Schwerner, 24, and Andrew Goodman, 20, were ambushed and brutally murdered by a group organized by Killen in Neshoba County, Miss. Killen was tried three years later, but the proceedings ended in a hung jury. The events inspired the 1988 movie Mississippi Burning. A lawyer for Killen could not be reached for comment.
DEATHS
Veteran character actor Lane Smith, 69, died June 13 in L.A. of Lou Gehrig's disease. Among his more recognizable roles was that of editor Perry White in the 1990s TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman starring Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher, and Joe Pesci's opposing counsel in the 1992 hit comedy My Cousin Vinny.
