Do Onesies Come in Camo? A Bumper Crop of Kids Puts This Army Base on Serious Diaper Duty
Don't accuse the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division of wasting time. Just over nine months since 5,000 soldiers returned from Iraq to Baumholder Army base in Germany, the place is crawling with newborns. "We normally have one or two births a month here," says Lt. Col. Mike Money, chiefnurse of Baumholder's health clinic. "Now we're having close to 40 a month." In a community of roughly 13,000 people, 400 families are expecting. Base shops have drastically upped inventories of diapers and formula. And with many new moms and dads preparing to redeploy in the fall, next up is expanding the base's daycare facilities. Says Devon Simpson, 27, a communications specialist whose wife, Nakita, 25, a medic, gave birth to twins Joshua and Ciarah in mid-June: "Even in the Army you get time off. But not with these guys."
