I try to create an atmosphere of warmth," says Spencer Tunick. Good thing. In the wee hours of Oct. 26, closely guarded by police, the 36-year-old artist—who has posed groups of naked volunteers in public spaces in the U.S. and around the world since 1992—had 450 nude women arrayed for picture on the chilly marble floor of Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal. Tunick says he has no problem getting his subjects, mostly ordinary folks who hear about his projects by word of mouth, in the mood. "It felt like he was doing a family portrait for a Christmas card" says actress and fashion designer Hannah Howard, 28. Next spring the artist plans something different. "We'll see what happens in New York," he says, "with 500 naked men."
