Those Lips, That Face...
In the Spirit of MTV's Hit I Want a Famous Face, Fans Reach for the Stars with Pricey (and Painful) Plastic Surgery. But Can Getting Keanu's Chin or J.Lo's Booty Change Your Life?
PROCEDURES: Chin implant, two rhinoplasties
An unemployed screenwriter who lives in Austin, Texas, Mills, 31, believes actor Keanu Reeves is "beautiful. He has a perfect face and a wonderful nose. People would tell me all the time that I looked like him. Minus his chin. Minus the nose."
In November 2002, Mills (who confesses he had "a low self-image" walked into a plastic surgeon's office with photos of Reeves and a plan to put the features he loved on his own face (another goal: to lessen his resemblance to his father, from whom he is estranged). The first surgery, a chin implant and a rhinoplasty, was disappointing: Dr. Robert Ersek removed a hump on the bridge of his nose that Mills liked. ("Maybe I should have talked to him more about what I wanted," the patient admits.) But Ersek's second rhinoplasty last July did the trick. "I'm happy with my profile now," says Mills. "It's cured my vanity problem." And his confidence? "I tell myself, 'People like you.... Like yourself.'"
MICHELLE FALSETTA / INSPIRED BY: JENNIFER LOPEZ
PROCEDURE: Gluteal augmentation
A personal trainer and bodybuilder, Falsetta had two breast-implant surgeries before pumping up her buttocks. "I know I'm a little bit over-the-top [since] I'm a competitive bodybuilder," says Falsetta, 37. But "my butt wasn't as round as I wanted, no matter how many squats I did." After a two-hour procedure in which silicone pads were inserted, she was in pain for weeks ("it felt like I was sitting on two balls"). Twenty months later, though, the New Yorker is thrilled: "Men are always looking and making comments. I got the J.Lo look."
DUSTIN DERRICK / INSPIRED BY: JOHN TRAVOLTA
PROCEDURES: Rhinoplasty, chin implant
"It's not like I was obsessed by Travolta," says Derrick, 20. "But I always hated my nose, and his seemed like a good nose to have." Last year the premed student took some Travolta photos to the Personique surgical center in Austin, Texas. In addition to surgery to reshape his nose, he opted for a chin implant with dimple (the center, where he had interned, paid for both). Although he worried that his dad (a surgeon) and mom (a nurse in a plastic surgeon's office) would nix the notion, his mom "told me it was my face—I could do what I wanted." On Nov. 19 Derrick underwent the three-hour procedure. Now, he says, "I'm really happy. People will say, 'Have you ever heard you look like John Travolta?' I'll tell them, 'Yeah, I do get that every now and then.'"
They got their faux-famous looks. Would they do it again?
JENETTE SANDIFER / INSPIRATION: KATE WINSLET
A gastric bypass in '01 helped the Plantation, Fla.-based Sandifer shed 125 lbs. but left her with loose skin under her breasts and stomach. Yearning to be "curvy and voluptuous, just like Kate," she had 12 lbs. of skin removed and got her breasts enlarged and lifted in August 2003. Saying, "I'm never going to be skinny," Sandifer, 21, is happily working as a plus-size model.
MIA DINORA / INSPIRATION: BRITNEY SPEARS
For Dinora, 28, spending about $10,000 on implants to give her a bust more like the pop tart's was "a career move." A fledgling actress in Orlando, Dinora had been earning cash by impersonating Spears at trade shows. The hitch? "I couldn't fill out the tops like she could. I needed breasts like hers to be convincing." Seven months after surgery that took her from a B-cup to a C, Dinora says the move was "absolutely worth it—my fee has gone up 75 percent."
MICHAEL AND MATTHEW SCHLEPP / INSPIRATION: BRAD PITT
Though MTV producers say the Schlepp twins "were fascinated" with Brad Pitt, the aspiring actors, 21, say they never wanted to be clones: They showed Pitt's profile to the surgeon and cosmetic dentist who did their rhinoplasties, chin implants, gum lifts and dental veneers (and, in Michael's case, cheek and jaw implants) because "we respect him as an actor and he has great bone structure," Matthew says. So are they glad? "I can't be happier," says Michael. "I would do it over again 10 times."
