On July 27 NBA guard Quentin Richardson, 24, proposed to R&B star Brandy, 25, with a one-of-a-kind $1 million diamond ring. "She was happy and crying," says jeweler Jason Arasheben, who joined the couple's families to witness the event at L.A.'s Century Club. Just a week earlier, music producer Robert Smith—from whom Brandy split last year—told a New York radio station that the two never actually married but pretended they had, to protect their daughter, Sy'rai, 2. In a statement Brandy said the couple had a "spiritual union."
Comedic actor Anthony Anderson, 34, was charged with aggravated rape July 27 in Memphis after a woman alleged that the actor and another man attacked her in a production trailer on the set of his upcoming film Hustle & Flow. A rep for the actor denied "the heinous charges," adding that "Anthony is a happily married family man."...Former model Kimora Lee Simmons, 29, the wife of hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and creative director of the Baby Phat clothing line, was charged with marijuana possession and several traffic infractions July 26, after police in Saddle River, N J., pulled her over for driving erratically. Simmons allegedly ignored the flashing lights of the police car for more than two miles before finally stopping her Mercedes in front of the couple's estate. "This is an attempt to denigrate Kimora's good name," said a statement from the couple. "We deny any wrongdoing whatsoever."
Arnold Schwarzenegger, 57, settled a lawsuit he had filed against toy company Ohio Discount Merchandise regarding a gun-carrying, bobble-head doll of the California governor. The company will continue to produce the doll, minus the gun, and will donate part of its profits from the doll to Schwarzenegger's after-school charity program. "We're very happy," said a co-owner of the toy company.
Actor Christian Slater, 34, was diagnosed with chicken pox after becoming ill July 30 while rehearsing" in London for his stage debut in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The play's producers remain hopeful that Slater will recover in time for the Aug. 6 opening night at the Edinburgh Festival.... Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs, 49, recently had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his pancreas. In an e-mail to employees, Jobs said that he had a rare form of the cancer—one that is far less dangerous than the more common variety—which was caught early and would require no chemotherapy or radiation treatment. He plans to return to work next month.
