DOMINIC MONAGHAN: I've done that completely method thing, where if you're playing a drug addict, you look and act like one and don't answer the questions that the producers ask. I don't think it works. If you're a lunatic, they get scared.
NICK STAHL: For Sin City the director wanted me to talk in a certain voice for this character. So I left my audition on an answering machine. It worked.
ADRIAN GRENIER: [For Entourage] they wanted Vince—the nonchalant, aloof, rebellious type—and I gave it to them. I told them to go [bleep] themselves. They called me and were like, 'You've got to come and audition.' I said, 'No, I don't, I'm busy. I'm doing stuff.' And they said, 'No, please come.' They knew, 'That's the guy!'
JANE SEYMOUR: It was for my Wedding Crashers audition. I walked into a room, took all my clothes off and insisted Owen Wilson fondle my bosom. I think anyone who does that at age 54, after six children and four marriages, is daring.
BILLY CRYSTAL: I sang a ballad in front of [German-stage legend] Lotte Lenya for a musical. It was an offbeat thing in somebody's apartment. She was knitting as I sang and never looked up. Then when I finished, she said, 'Thank you. You should never sing a ballad.' I did not get the job.
RICKY GERVAIS: I've never done anything daring in my life. I look three times before I cross the road and I ask drivers to slow down.
I sang—and I can't sing. It was for a new Love Boat. They asked if I could; I said, 'Yeah.' Then they said, 'Okay.' I said, 'Now?' I didn't get the part.
Showing my stomach for The Sopranos.
Going over to Cambodia scouting [for 2003's City of Ghosts]. I found myself walking into very remote areas that had not been cleared for land mines, but I didn't realize it at the time.
I did an impersonation of Will Ferrell in spandex with bunny ears on. We'll see if I get it. I don't know if it worked yet.
