The Devil Wears Prada

It's like a Star Wars movie for the fashion world—an anxiously awaited release with heavily costumed actors and a lexicon all its own (e.g., "clackers," the sound magazine staffers' high heels make, and "Lacroix," a designer). Based on the book of the same name, the film revolves around Andrea Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, as the assistant to fictional Runway fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly. To navigate the world of couture, Devil director David Frankel turned to costumer Patricia Field of Sex and the City and "let her do her thing," he says. "She's an icon in the industry. I knew she'd get it right." And PEOPLE turned to Field for behind-the-scenes dish.

Q&A: Anne Hathaway

What was your dressing room like?
There must have been $100,000 worth of bags from every designer imaginable. Meryl and I had separate rooms full of clothes.

Did you have a favorite piece?
I wear this incredible Galliano in a scene where Andy goes to a gala. Every time I put it on I sang Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl." I'm amazed I got to wear something so beautiful.

Did you keep anything?
I kept a [Gharani Strok] top with these little metal pieces that I seriously wear three days a week. But when you do a film, you sweat so much in these clothes you kind of never want to see them again!

Behind the Seams

BATHING BOOTY: Nicole Kidman got a little scentimental while visiting Tennessee, the home state of fiancé Keith Urban. The Aussie actress strolled into L'Occitane boutique in Green Hills and stocked up on their verbena-scented salt scrub and bubble bath....

GET THE LOOK: Jennifer Aniston

THE BREAK-UP MAKEUP

Breaking up is hard to do, but getting Jennifer Aniston's red carpet look from the premiere of her film is easy. "I was inspired by Brigitte Bardot," says makeup artist Angela Levin, who used the products at right to create a look she calls "steamy and gorgeous."

On Eyes: Levin layered both blue shades of the compact on Aniston's lids, then wet a flat brush with eye drops and used it to apply the dark blue as liner.

On Skin: "It's all about golden," says Levin, who used bronzer on Aniston.

On Lips: Levin applied this liner, which "goes well with every color lipstick," then topped it with coral gloss.

SECRETS FROM THE SET

Desperate Housewives

Even on steamy Wisteria Lane, the cast manages to stay frizz-free. What's their secret to humidity-proof hair? Show stylist Nicole Frank says it was "a defining moment" when they tried Barex Italiana's new Frizzy Hair line, a light shampoo, conditioning cream and UVA and UVB-shielding serum that keep hair "sleek during long takes, despite rising temperatures." And tempers.

Barex Italiana Frizzy Hair Shampoo, $24; Re-Define Crème, $26; and Glass Cristalline, $26; 800-233-6695 for salons.

Double Vision

Finalists in the Miss Milkmaid contest? No, these two leading ladies chose this retro, peasant-inspired hairstyle—a braid encircling the head—to go out on the town. Gyllenhaal wore it to a New York City party and Dunst sported it at the premiere of Marie Antoinette at Cannes.
