Outed CIA officer Valerie Plame and her husband, former U.S. ambassador Joseph Wilson, filed a suit July 13 against Vice President Dick Cheney, his former aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby and presidential adviser Karl Rove, claiming they violated their constitutional rights. Tough-guy writer Mickey Spillane, creator of the Mike Hammer detective series, died July 17 in Murrells Inlet, S.C., at age 88 of undisclosed causes. During his career of five decades, critics often dismissed his blunt, gritty style, but his novels sold millions and spawned a 1980s TV show. Spillane even played up his image in Miller Lite beer commercials.
"I'm a little guy," said Red Buttons, "and that's what I play." Yet, despite his 5′6″ height, the character actor, who died July 13 at 87 of vascular disease, made a big impression with his quick wit and dramatic skills, even winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as a soldier in 1957's Sayonora. "He was very warm," notes comic Don Rickles. "Audiences loved him." With a career that spanned 70 years, Buttons (born Aaron Chwatt) "made the transition from comedian to serious actor and then to a stand-up and [celebrity-roast] emcee," says comedian Norm Crosby. "Everything he did well." Adds actress Renee Taylor: "He was in a lot of pain at the end. Yet he said, 'I had a great life and I'm ready to go.'"
