Cybill Shepherd & Clementine Ford
Cybill and Her Actress Daughter Dish on Dating, Embarrassing Moments and Costarring on The L Word
28 CLEMENTINE BORN JUNE 29, 1979
When Cybill Shepherd is your mom, going home for a visit is never dull. On a recent rainy evening, Shepherd walks into her kitchen singing the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" with her small portable CD player in hand. "Let's dance!" she tells her daughter Clementine, grabbing her hand and swinging her into a waltz. Clementine, whose father is Cybill's first husband, David Ford, is also working alongside her mom these days: On Showtime's drama The L Word, which launched its fifth season Jan. 6, Clementine plays the daughter of Cybill's character, a woman who comes out as a lesbian in middle age. Both divorced (Shepherd also has twins from her second marriage: Ariel and Zachariah Oppenheim, 20), mother and daughter talked with PEOPLE's Brenda Rodriguez about their special bond.
NICE MOVES. DOES YOUR MOM ALWAYS HAVE THIS MUCH ENERGY?
CLEMENTINE: Yeah, except for when she crashes and falls asleep. Her big quote is "I have to get horizontal."
YOUR MOM HAS SOME STEAMY LOVE SCENES IN THE L WORD. IS IT WEIRD TO WATCH?
CLEMENTINE: I don't!
CYBILL: It's embarrassing. That's what fast-forward is for.
CLEMENTINE: I wouldn't watch some of the love scenes in Moonlighting. There's certain things you just don't want to see your parents doing.
CYBILL, WE HEAR YOU HAVE A FEMALE CRUSH IN REAL LIFE ...
CYBILL: Salma Hayek! I always thought she was one of the most attractive people in the world. That was one of the things that was in the tabloids that was true.
YOUR MOM HAS A REPUTATION FOR SPEAKING HER MIND. HOW DO YOU DEAL?
CLEMENTINE: That's my mom! That's the way that she is. I have friends who have just as outspoken moms. They're just not in the public eye.
WHAT'S THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT HER?
CLEMENTINE: That she is difficult and demanding. She's very focused on her work; she's not there to make best friends. She's there to get the job done, and a lot of people take that the wrong way.
YOU HAVE TWIN SIBLINGS; ARE YOU CLOSE?
CLEMENTINE: I'm so lucky to have my siblings. Ariel is my best friend. Zach and I have had our bumps. The problem with me and Zach is that we are exactly the same. But my siblings are everything to me.
CYBILL, ANY CRAZY MEMORY FROM CLEMENTINE'S CHILDHOOD?
CYBILL: Yeah, the first time she bit me while we were nursing.
CLEMENTINE: She dropped me on my head.
CYBILL: I did not! She was under 2, and it caught me by surprise. I just stood up, and she rolled onto the rug. She never bit me again.
OUCH! CLEMENTINE, CAN YOU TOP THAT?
CLEMENTINE: She wrote a book about her life and her sexcapades. I was 20. That's just insane! So that was a little much.
YEAH, BUT YOUR MOM DATED ELVIS!
CLEMENTINE: I bring it up at parties when I don't have anything to talk about. I'm like, "Oh yeah, my mom dated Elvis."
SPEAKING OF DATING, HOW'S IT GOING?
CYBILL: I want to have a date! I'm looking for a really fun, intelligent, financially independent, creative man.
CLEMENTINE: Put that in bold: financially independent.
SO AT 57, DOES YOUR MOM STILL HAVE IT?
CLEMENTINE: She's gorgeous. God willing I look like that at her age.
CYBILL: Let me tell you about this child. There's a great country song called "She Don't Know She's Beautiful."
CLEMENTINE: Okay! Okay! Yeah, she's not biased at all.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU FIGHT ABOUT?
CYBILL: We all feel very strongly about what music we listen to. We share a lot of musical tastes but not at the same time.
CLEMENTINE: We were in the car on Christmas, and I was pushing one button and she was pushing another. We have a very healthy back and forth. It keeps us on our toes!
