There is much about life that Apple Martin can teach her baby brother Moses. For starters, when you're feeling fussy, get Dad to sing lullabies. When you feel like wiggling to the beat, go for Mom's friend Madonna. Try not to fall asleep before your bath, because the massage that Mom gives you afterward is awesome. Don't ever touch the red cowboy boots; they belong to your big sister (who turns 2 on May 14). And finally, avoid eating the bugs buzzing around the New York countryside, where a week after Moses' April 8 birth he joined his new family—mom Gwyneth Paltrow, dad Chris Martin and Apple—for an afternoon outing. See, bugs are not on Mom's macrobiotic diet, though come to think of it, she has been relenting on her no-sugar, no-dairy, no-junk regimen lately. Pizza. Tuna sandwiches. The cheesecake (okay, it was vegan) she got for Apple's first birthday. "It's a different stomach now," Paltrow recently told British Vogue of her turn of heart, er, tummy. "There's always room for dessert."

Yes, for the mother of Apple and Moses—who spent her twenties sipping miso soup for breakfast, making back-to-back films and feeling, as she told British Glamour earlier this year, "kind of sad," life is sweet. "Gwyneth is beyond happy," says a source close to the actress. Paltrow, 33, and Martin, 29, are both "very, very hands-on parents," says Rachel Waddilove, Apple's former nanny. And while the birth of Apple sent them "over-the-moon," as Martin said at the time, well, they now have the stars too. Marriage and motherhood helped her to "heal," she said, from the loss of her father, producer-director Bruce Paltrow, who died in 2002 at age 58 of complications from throat cancer (see story, page 115). A second child was always part of the plan for Gwyneth, whose younger brother Jake is 31. (Martin is the oldest of five.) As she told USA Today, "I can't imagine not having a sibling."

Or a mother—actress Blythe Danner, 63—to babysit. Paltrow recently wrapped small parts in the upcoming movies Running with Scissors, Infamous, Dirty Tricks and The Good Night (which Jake wrote and directed). As she told PEOPLE, "I've done everything career-wise that I wanted to do." Now she just wants to spend time with the kids at their homes in London and Manhattan—and on a few stops with Martin as he tours the U.S. with his band Coldplay this summer. "He's the daddy," she told British Vogue. "He works. I'm the mummy. I'm at home trying to look after everybody." Oh, and note to Moses: Don't sweat it if Apple won't share the red boots. Mummy could hardly deny you a pair of your own. Says a source close to her: "She's in love with her son."
