Sen. Ted Kennedy, 76, D-Mass., underwent surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., June 2 for a malignant brain tumor. The senator is expected to remain hospitalized for about a week before starting radiation and chemotherapy in Boston. • The fire that ravaged portions of Universal Studios Hollywood's back lot June 1 was started by three employees using a blowtorch to heat asphalt roofing shingles, according to L.A. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. • Lorenzo Odone, 30, whose parents' struggle to save him from a genetic disorder was depicted in the 1992 Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte film Lorenzo's Oil, died of pneumonia in Fairfax County, Va., May 30. • Photographer David Gahr, 85, who took iconic pictures of such rockers as Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen, died while at home in Brooklyn May 25.
