LEGAL MATTERS
The U.S. Attorney's Office closed its investigation Aug. 6 into Heath Ledger's death from an accidental overdose and will not enforce a subpoena against Mary-Kate Olsen, according to a source. Ledger, 28, was found dead in a SoHo apartment on Jan. 22 by his massage therapist, who called Olsen. Her attorney said she already provided "relevant information."

Morgan Freeman was released from a Memphis hospital Aug. 7, four days after the car he was driving flipped over on a Mississippi highway. The next day Freeman's lawyer confirmed that the actor, 71, and his wife of 24 years, Myrna Colley-Lee, 67, were divorcing.
DEATH
Bernie Brillstein, a Hollywood talent manager and producer for more than 50 years, died at 77 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Aug. 7 in L.A. Brillstein, who started in the mail room at the William Morris Agency, represented Saturday Night Live's Lorne Michaels and John Belushi and produced hits such as Ghostbusters and Dangerous Liaisons.
GOODBYE TO THE SOUL MAN
Isaac Hayes, the silky baritone behind the Oscar-winning '70s superhit "Theme from Shaft" who voiced South Park's Chef, died Aug. 10 after collapsing at his Memphis-area home. Raised in Covington, Tenn., by his sharecropper grandparents, Hayes, 65, was a pioneer at Memphis' Stax Records and helped write '60s classics like "Soul Man." Solo success came to the singer with 1969's Hot Buttered Soul and Shaft's title song. With his gold chains and sunglasses, "he was the embodiment of black empowerment," says Tim Sampson, spokesman for the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. "His soulful music touched millions of hearts," says singer Ashanti.
