"The Obamas are a delightful, down-to-earth family who seem to love one another very much"

It has been a long time since an article warmed my heart the way this one did. The Obamas are an incredibly grounded (and gorgeous) family. While they are understandably hopeful about winning the presidency, I appreciate their perspective on life if they don't. The Obamas represent what is good and decent about this country. Whatever the outcome in November, they've made us proud.

The love Barack and Michelle have for their daughters and for each other is quite obvious. Senator Obama is definitely the candidate who portrays what family values are all about.

As an African-American I felt proud when I saw the Obama family on your cover. Did anyone ever think the day would come when we would have an African-American as the Democratic presidential nominee?

I hope that given your cover story about the Obamas, we will also get a cover story on the McCains. Not everyone who reads PEOPLE is a Democrat.

PREGNANT MAN
Congratulations to Thomas and Nancy Beatie on the birth of their beautiful baby girl. Susan Juliette is truly a blessing. As the mother of two young children, I know the Beaties have many joys to look forward to. I hope people will respect the life Thomas and Nancy have brought into this world, no matter how they did it.

CARLOS LEON
I always thought Madonna's ex Carlos Leon was a good guy. Lourdes is very lucky to have him for a father.

TWO COREYS
Corey Haim needs to quit blaming everything and everyone for his relapse. He needs to grow up and get honest. Mr. Haim also needs to do his own work to be free of addiction. Corey Feldman is a mensch and is right to distance himself from Mr. Haim. I respect Mr. Feldman; Corey Haim, not so much.

BALTHAZAR GETTY
Brothers & Sisters star Balthazar Getty should not be complaining about how those photos of his steamy Italian vacation with actress Sienna Miller caused him and his family "great embarrassment." Mr. Getty, who is the father of four, should have separated from his wife before he got involved with Ms. Miller.

HOPE FOR MADDIE?
The Madeleine McCann saga seemed to be drawing to a close July 21, when Portuguese police ended their investigation and formally cleared the British girl's parents of any involvement in her kidnapping last year. But when 20,000 pages of files were released Aug. 4, Kate and Gerry McCann were shocked to learn about numerous leads and possible sightings that police had never before shared. Most disturbing was an incident in Amsterdam shortly after the abduction, in which a girl closely resembling Madeleine spoke to a shop assistant in English, saying her name was Maddie and that she had been taken from her mother while on holiday. As the McCanns' private investigators pore over the files, the couple vow to press on. "We need to know everything," Gerry told CNN, "and we will never give up."
Correction
In a caption on page 106 of our August 4 issue, we identified the man and woman pictured with Olympic sprinter Sanya Richards as her mother and father. The man in the photo is not Sanya's father, Archie Richards. We regret the error.
