"I hope John Edwards realizes how truly fortunate he is to have Elizabeth for his wife"

I commend Elizabeth Edwards for her ability to understand and, more importantly, to forgive. The forgiveness she has extended to her husband does not mean acceptance or approval of his adulterous actions, but rather that she understands her role is not to be the judge. I pray she finds peace in her heart and John Edwards is able to rise to the needs of his family, rather than his own.

What a wonderful woman and mother Elizabeth Edwards is. To be dealing with terminal cancer and an unfaithful husband at the same time is almost unimaginable. I applaud her decision to keep the family together so that when she is gone, her children will have a relationship with their father. God bless her.

While I understand her desire to meet the needs of her family, I can't respect Elizabeth Edwards for campaigning to get a man she knows to be a liar and a cheat elected President.

John Edwards said he cheated on his wife only after she went into remission. Is that supposed to be some sort of free pass? Doesn't John mean he cheated on Elizabeth after she helped him build his career, had a family, lost a son, bore two additional children, accompanied him onto the world stage and was diagnosed with cancer?

BERNIE MAC
I would like to express my sadness at the passing of Bernie Mac. Sarcoidosis is a very challenging disease for those of us who live with it. Mr. Mac was a voice for all of those who suffer. He lived his life with vigor and helped others to laugh, even though his health was deteriorating. Bernie Mac was an inspiration to me and will be sorely missed.

DAN ROONEY
I appreciated the article on Dan Rooney, founder of Folds of Honor, which provides college scholarships to families of service people killed or disabled in the line of duty. My son's father, 1st Lt. Jonathan Brostrom, was killed last month in Afghanistan. It is good to know there are people like Mr. Rooney who will remember the sacrifices our loved ones made long after they are gone. Thank you to Folds of Honor and thank you to all the men and women fighting for our freedom.

CLAY AIKEN
Congratulations to Clay Aiken. I always believed that he would make a wonderful father. It's just like Clay to march to the beat of his own drum.

A TEST OF FAITH
Although still mourning their loss, Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman and his family are slowly recovering from the death of 5-year-old Maria, who died on May 21 when she was accidentally struck by an SUV driven by her brother Will, 17. A bright spot on the horizon is the Oct. 4 wedding of daughter Emily, 22, for which her dad is composing music. The three youngest kids, Will, Shaoey, 9, and Stevey Joy, 5, are returning to school, and Caleb, 18, will join Steven on tour as a guitarist with his band. But the whole family is continuing with counseling to cope with their grief. As spokesman Jim Houser says, "There are sad, hard, very painful days, but I see a real hopefulness in each of them now."
Correction
In the photo caption on page 51 of our Aug. 25 issue, we should have said Bernie Mac's daughter Je'Niece is on the far left.
