Roxana Saberi, 32, an American-born freelance journalist of Iranian parentage, was convicted and sentenced April 18 to eight years in prison in Iran for being a spy for the United States. The former Miss North Dakota, who has been based in Iran for the past six years, was working for such U.S. outlets as ABC News and NPR when she was arrested in January for buying alcohol, a crime in that country. She was later cited for working as a journalist without legal credentials, then charged with the more serious offense of espionage. Her attorney said he would appeal the ruling within 20 days.•A woman accused of stalking filmmaker-actor Tyler Perry, 39, famous for his cross-dressing role Madea, was arrested outside his Atlanta production studio April 15. Dawne Wilson, 36, is being held in jail without bond until an April 30 court hearing.

A hospital spokesman said April 20 that renowned mathematician Stephen Hawking, 67, had been rushed to a Cambridge, England, facility after fighting a chest infection for several weeks. Known for his innovations in the study of black holes, he has been almost completely paralyzed for years due to Lou Gehrig's disease, with which he was diagnosed at 21. He communicates through an electronic voice synthesizer activated by his fingers.

DEATHS

J.G. Ballard, 78, author of the famous 1984 memoir Empire of the Sun, died of prostate cancer in London April 19. His seminal work, adapted by Steven Spielberg for a 1987 box-office hit, chronicled his childhood years in a Japanese internment camp during the 1940s in China, where he was born to British parents.

THE PAISLEYS' NEW BABY BOY

Grammy-winning country star Brad Paisley, 36, and his wife of six years, According to Jim actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley, 37, expanded their brood with the birth of a second son, Jasper Warren, in Nashville April 17. The newborn joins big brother William Huckleberry, 2, and his middle name is a tribute to Brad's grandfather, who gave the future Academy of Country Music Top Male Vocalist his first guitar and encouraged him to pursue his musical dreams.
