Behind the Scenes!
A Backstage Look at Selena and Demi's Many Projects—Wizards, Sonny and Princess Protection Program
Demi and Selena film a music video for the song "One and the Same" from their film Princess Protection Program.
"She brings humor to everything," says Gomez (with costars Jake T. Austin, left, and David Henrie) of her Wizards character.
"He's a cool guy," says Gomez of Henrie. "He looks out for me."
Selena gets a touch-up before going in front of the cameras.
THE WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE
The gang reviews an upcoming scene with producers.
"I think Jennifer will be one of my maids of honor," says Gomez of costar Stone.
MEET THE CAST!
THE WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE
PLAYS: Alex's best friend, Harper, who has no magical powers
HOMETOWN: Arlington, Texas
Did you know Selena growing up?
I knew Demi more than I knew Selena. I met Selena once on a Walker, Texas Ranger movie of the week, and I was saying hi to Demi, and she was like, "Oh, this is my friend Selena." And then I went back to talking to Demi. I bring up this story to Selena, and she's like, "I don't remember that at all." But I do. I was probably 13.
How into fashion are you?
Fashion is a big part of my life, and it's definitely one of my hobbies. I love fashion from the 1930s and 1940s. I have designers I'm drawn to like Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Anna Sui and Betsey Johnson. I collect a lot of vintage clothing. It's a fun side thing. But I wouldn't starve for it.
Is there a childhood toy you've held onto?
I have this little Pokémon Pikachu doll from McDonald's, and I took it everywhere. It's the rattiest thing, but I still have it. It's on my memory shelf.
PLAYS: Justin Russo, wizard-in-training and wannabe ladies' man
HOMETOWN: Scottsdale, Arizona
What was your first acting job?
A Burger King commercial. I was about 9 years old. I was this business kid and I had to say, "Yes, sir," and I had this lisp when I said s's. I was talking on the phone in a business outfit and I said, "Yes, sir," and that was my one line. I remember they gave me this really cool watch on that shoot, and I was so stunned.
What can't you live without?
Pizza. I went to Italy this past year. The pizza there was breathtaking. It dissolves in your mouth and you can eat as much as you want because you walk everywhere.
What's your biggest splurge?
I love watches. I went out and I got this Breitling Bentley, brand-new, chrome with a black face. It was the sickest watch, and I wore it everywhere. I'm so bad with things—either I lost it or someone stole it. I'm never buying another watch again.
JAKE T. AUSTIN
PLAYS: Max, the youngest and most mischievous Merlin-in-training
HOMETOWN: New York City
If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do?
I'd probably go to my school and mess with some of my teachers. I'd definitely mess with David Henrie. He's so gullible.
At home, do you have chores?
Definitely. It's just me and my dad [in L.A.], so I take out the garbage, do the dishes, clean up the bathroom, the house. And I cook. I cook eggs, rice and pasta with marinara—three things you can live off of.
What's your craziest fan encounter?
We were at a taping of our show and I was signing autographs, and this girl wanted to get a picture with me and I said, "Okay." I put my arm around her and I turned and she kissed me right on the mouth. I almost fell off a balcony, and the mom took the picture and I was like, "Mom, what are you doing taking that picture?" That is insane!
SONNY WITH A CHANCE
The So Random! kids try to drum up some buzz on Sonny.
Guest-starring on Sonny (in February) "was so fun," says Selena (with Demi and her castmates Sterling Knight and Thornton).
"I think I was born to play this role. It's really fun, and I'm very quirky inside," says costar Allisyn Ashley Arm.
NO PLACE LIKE HOLLYWOOD
"If anyone compares our show to Saturday Night Live, I'm honored," says Doug Brochu (playing the Cowardly Lion in a Sonny skit with Tiffany Thornton as Dorothy and Brandon Smith as the Scarecrow).
"Demi blows us away every day—she's so talented," says Sterling of the show's Big Foot-smooching lead.
MEET THE CAST!
SONNY WITH A CHANCE
PLAYS: Teen hearthrob Chad Dylan Cooper, who rubs Sonny the wrong way
Are you anything like your character?
Not at all. He's such a manipulator! He gets whatever he wants, whenever he wants it. I'm a total nerd.
You share an apartment with High School Musical 3 star Matt Prokop. What's that like?
Domino's is on speed dial. We get double pepperoni with extra sauce. We spend a lot of time watching movies, ESPN and VH1 reality shows. He's cleaner. In my room, you can barely see the floor. I find comfort in the chaos.
You brought your guitar to the photo shoot—are you two inseparable?
It sat under my bed for six years. Three years ago I made a deal with my parents that if I could play eight songs, they'd get me an electric guitar. I played until there was blood on the guitar!
ALLISYN ASHLEY ARM
PLAYS: Zora, the quirky gadget queen
HOMETOWN: Glendale, Calif.
What's it like on the Sonny set?
It's a very cool environment. Everyone's joking around all the time and pulling pranks. We have this pillow dummy with a vampire mask, and we dress it up and hide it in people's dressing rooms.
What are some of your favorite TV shows?
I watch a lot of SNL skits online. I love Chris Farley and Jim Carrey. I always think, "What would Jim Carrey do in this scene?" He's a lot of my inspiration for my character.
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? Still acting?
Yeah, but probably also writing and directing. I'm always writing skits and posting them on YouTube, and when my dad and I are driving home from auditions, we come up with silly songs and make little music videos. It's funny!
PLAYS: Sonny's wacky So Random! costar Nico Harris
HOMETOWN: Los Angeles
What do you do with downtime on set?
Doug Brochu [see profile below] and I go bowling. Tiffany Thornton [right] came once too, and bowled a 158. We were bowling 130. She's good!
How did you develop Nico?
I looked at tapes of Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock to get that energy they give off and then added the Brandon Smith twist!
Moving out of your parents' home anytime soon?
I'm moving in with [Wizards'] David Henrie. It's a three-story house.
PLAYS: Jokester Grady Mitchell
HOMETOWN: Fayetteville, N.C.
How did you get into acting?
My sister started, then I tried it and loved it. We did extra work, saved up, put all our checks in a cookie jar and came out to L.A. two years ago.
Do you have a secret talent?
This is going to sound really nerdy, but I was in the top clan for the game Team Fortress 2 on Xbox. I know 60 percent of the people who are reading this won't care, but there will be some that do!
PLAYS: Tawni Hart, Sonny's fame-hungry costar and nemesis
HOMETOWN: College Park, Texas
How did you get the role of Tawni?
I made the rounds at Disney! I must have auditioned for That's So Raven 10 times before I got a part as a guest star. I auditioned to play Hannah Montana years ago, but they went with Miley, who's fabulous. I popped my head in the door as often as I could. It's a dream come true.
How does the cast bond off set?
I'm from the South and my grandma taught me how to cook chicken and dumplings. Everybody comes over and has them. And we go to Demi's house for meatloaf Wednesdays. Her aunt cooks the best meatloaf I've had.
Have you and Demi become pals?
She's one of my best friends. She has so many answers in that little head of hers! I tend to get nervous in an environment I've never been in before, and she'll be like, "There's no reason to be nervous. They're going to love you!" It's nice.
