Antique doorknobs can make a decorative hanging rack for coats, towels or other items.
1. Paint a piece of wood molding to desired color.
2. Drill holes into wood at even intervals.
3. Attach dummy spindles (about $6 each at hardware stores), then screw on doorknobs.
Shutter Message Station
Transform a louvered shutter into a place to store notes, mail and magazines.
1. Cut a piece of cardboard or foam-core to fit top half of shutter. Glue onto back of shutter to serve to prevent small items from slipping through louvers. Leave the bottom louvers open so magazines can hang through.
2. To add a message board, paint a piece of galvanized metal with chalkboard paint and screw onto shutter. Fold a piece of felt into a loop and glue onto shutter to hold chalk.
3. Add hooks on bottom for keys.
Organize earrings and pins!
Jewelry Frames
Picture frames lined with fabric can make a decorative and convenient way to store jewelry on a dresser.
1. Cut a piece of foam-core to fit inside frame.
2. Cut a piece of fabric 2" larger in length and width than foam-core. Wrap foam-core with fabric and tape in place.
3. Put small amount of glue on inside edge of frame, then push fabric-wrapped foam-core into frame. Allow to dry.
4. Hang jewelry with tiny pushpins inserted into foam-core.
Charging Box
Get rid of cord clutter with a neat system for holding cell phones, iPods and other devices while they charge.
1. Drill a hole in the back of a decorative box using a 1¼" hole-saw bit.
2. Glue outlet strip to inside back of box, with plug extending through the hole, then connect to outlet with an extension cord.
Children's Book Display
Keep kids' books organized—and within easy reach—with pretty display shelves.
1. Cut L-shaped wood molding strips to serve as shelves.
2. Glue ¾" trim to top edge of shelves so books don't slide off.
3. Paint shelves desired color, then attach shelves to wall.
