Kathie Lee Gifford's Favorite Television Memories
The Today Show Host Recalls Some of TV's Great Series and Moments (including a Couple of Kathie Lee Impressions)
This was groundbreaking because it was about a woman in the workplace. It was never really about her personal life; it was about her work life with her coworkers, which was fantastic. And talk about perfect casting!
THE COSBY SHOW (1984)
This was the first time we saw an African-American family just living. It was not in any way about their race; it was just about their family. I thought that was profound.
ALL IN THE FAMILY (1971)
It was the first time we used TV as a mirror to our social, cultural soul. It got people looking at themselves, asking, "Am I a bigot? Does that look like my house? Do I put down my son-in-law?" It invented watercooler TV.
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (1975)
Born in 1975 and it's still here. This is my second round being parodied on SNL. Jan Hooks played me the first time and now it's Kristin Wiig. It's all about being a survivor—but that's another show, isn't it?
I just remember knowing the world would never be the same after Roots and feeling like that was a very good thing.
DALLAS AND DYNASTY (1978)
To me they were the same. They came out around the same time. They were both about this rich soap opera being played out before our eyes. It was all about the shoulder pads!
In a way Regis and I are responsible for reality TV. We were the first to talk about our lives for a living on TV. And I got flak for even talking about my children. Now we watch kids go from the womb to puberty to rehab. Oh, for the good ole days...
The all-time best TV show. I said to Regis, "We were doing nothing before Seinfeld was doing nothing!" We did the episode when Kramer spits coffee all over my Kathie Lee Casual original. That's what life's about: the small ridiculous moments.
CHARLIE'S ANGELS (1976)
I remember this as the first national frenzy, when every woman wanted to be Farrah or Jaclyn or Kate. And most of them, let's be honest, wanted to be Farrah.
I'm a news junkie, and I think most people are concerned about the world. 24 falls in line with that.
